I know in Allegany County, Maryland we now have a standard for Engines that meet a minimum amount of rescue equipment but here is the question. We call them Engine-Rescues and other places call them Rescue-Engines
My personal opinion is

Engine-Rescue is an Engine that’s primary duty is Engine operations with secondary (more limited) Extrication ability

Rescue-Engine is a Squad that is equipped and staffed for Rescue operations with a pump - minimal water and hose to allow them to provide secondary engine functions

What do you think?

One more thing I feel that Engine-Rescue or Rescue-Engine should be also based on the personnel on board. if you have a crew that is rescue trained then you respond as Engine-Rescue or Rescue-Engine and if your crew is made up of Firefighters with out Rescue training you respond as Engine and the Dispatch automatically should fill in with apparatus and crew to fill the rescue duty.

Well, we solve this by having our fire people be our rescue people, and vice versa. On a rural, vollie FD you have to be versitile. When the new rescue comes in, it will be a RESCUE-PUMPER. :D

Big cities have Fire Engines.

Out here, we have pumpers.

And it's pronounced Toe-May-Toe :D
