Description: Responds to fire alarms and other emergency and non-emergency calls to protect life and property. Performs skilled work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. Serves as driver of an EMS unit or other fire related vehicle, assisting in rescue and extrication operations, and providing emergency medical care to the sick and injured.
Minimum Qualifications: High school graduation or possession of a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education. Must be at least 19 at the time of application. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be tobacco-free and nicotine-free at the time of appointment, and be willing to sign a Conditions of Employment Agreement to not use tobacco or tobacco products on or off-duty.
Selection Procedure: All applicants must successfully complete a written entrance exam, prescreening evaluation, Physical Ability Test (orientation), Physical Ability Test (exam), personal interview, psychological profile, polygraph and criminal background investigation. Prior to starting work, the selected applicant must successfully complete a comprehensive medical examination and cardiovascular evaluation.
Note: Recruits must successfully complete up to 22 weeks of paid training at the Fairfax County Training Academy and a one year probationary period.
