I'm starting a new thread for this since we went off subject in another thread about this election.

Iraq electoral commission admits ballot box irregularities

Mon Feb 7,10:31 AM ET Mideast - AFP

BAGHDAD (AFP) - An inquiry by the Iraqi electoral commission reported that there had been irregularities with some 40 ballot boxes used in the January 30 election in Nineveh province around the main northern city of Mosul.

"A total of 435 ballot boxes used in Nineveh province did not pose any problems, they were opened and their ballots added to the election tally," the commission said Monday.

"Another 40 ballot boxes have led to complaints and appeals, or were not sealed in conformity with the instructions, which obliged us to transfer them to the national office in Baghdad to open a probe."

Dozens of Nineveh residents demonstrated in Baghdad Sunday calling on the commission to organise a new vote in some of the province's towns. Deputy governor Khasro Goran said several areas had not received ballot papers on polling day.

"On election day, the commission received many calls from its representatives in Nineveh and several political parties claiming that some regions had not received electoral equipment on time," the commission said.

Its investigation found that only in Bartalla, a town east of Mosul with 15,188 electors, did the vote not take place.

Equipment was delivered but electoral staff were "not able to reach the polling stations due to security reasons," the commission said.

The inquiry also found that armed groups had attacked electoral workers and stolen equipment. In one incident, gunmen stole ballot papers before handing them back with candidate lists already ticked off.

The commission is still tallying votes from the election. Partial results give the main Shiite alliance a commanding lead over all of its rivals.

Ok. An election that is/was not perfect...we should be used to that by now!!! I doubt anyone thought that it would be perfect, but its legitimacy will be determined by the Iraqis, not us.

NO NO, the whole point to this was that we got off subject in the other thread about the election. (among numerous other things) SO, I put this one here, the point of this goes with my statement in the other thread. Do we think the election will really make a difference. YES, they got to vote, but will they be able to handle their country and their people?
Not to mention I think it's funny that the elections there are as f****d up as they are here! Can't tell the US govt. has their hand in that election can you? ROFL

Ok I get your drift mom, however as you know in history an election has formed this great country along time ago. And I hope that their country has the same luck. You can't argue that. Plus I heard the person that screwed up the Florida election went over to Iraq to form theirs. Go figure. I think is name was Michael Moore

Emtmom,

I do NOT think anything in Iraq is funny. Name one election in the history of the world that was perfect. Hell, my IAFF local had an election where every member was present and voted...the ballots were counted immediately by 3 people, and someone STILL complained about it!!!

Emtmom,

I do NOT think anything in Iraq is funny. Name one election in the history of the world that was perfect. Hell, my IAFF local had an election where every member was present and voted...the ballots were counted immediately by 3 people, and someone STILL complained about it!!!The problem is that ballots are missing, boxes were opened. I find it humorous that an election that this country INSISTED had to happen when the country said a month ago there was no way they would be ready to hold, has problems. Maybe OUR country should have listened to the interim leaders there and given them more time to prepare! They had only asked for a month, but this country said NO, the election WILL take place. Good lord man, loosen up!

If the turn out for the election does not convince you of the success, then nothing will, so why don't YOU loosen up?

I'd say we had more voting problems, even with a lower % of the population voting

Like voting machines being stuffed before the polls opened in philly

or democrats slashing republican party workers tires on voting day?

yeah, the iraqui's wanted to postpone elections. CBS reported it, therefore it's airtight.

"I just wish we could see more viable 3rd party candidates"

Agreed. I'm tired of having to pick between the lesser of two evils.
