A-459 is not a Fort Meade Fire Dept. unit. The ambulances/PM units are part of the hospital command which is under Walter Reed Army Med Center. The chief of the EMS section (who is also a county paramedic) thought it would be a great idea to use the FMFD county designation for their units. Let them earn their own black eyes, we have our own troubles...lol

tIM THE ONLY PIECES IN SERVICE NOW ARE AS YOU SAID NEW ENGS. 11, 13 AND T-2 ALSO AS FAR AS I KNOW THE ONE MACI IS STILL IN SERVICE (E23).
TOP IS OLD E-11 AFTER REHAB WITH THE "COFFIN" ADDED THIS WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET IN AND OUT OF ESPECIALLY ITH FULL GEAR AND SCBA ON. E-13 AFTER BEING LETTERED, E-13 AFTER FIRST REHAB, E-13 BEFORE BEING PLACED IN SERVICE. NOTE THAT THE E-13 IN THESE PICS IS THE SAME AS THE PRESENT ONE. THE OLDER PICS IT HAS THE SAME CAB BUT AN FTI BODY.

Tommy, I gotta throw this out there, cuz it drives me nuts when people do this. The term "MACI" can be applied to anything that the military uses that is not bought specifically for the military. It stands for Military Adaptable Commecial Item or MACI. Therefore a can opener can be a MACI. MACI is not a brand name. You also forgot that the other Ford/E-One is still around, and it was rehabbed in 1996 also at the USCG Yard in Curtis Bay, but without the cab extension and it was repainted red. It is E-12.

It's in the industrial area right off the main road. Getting onto military installations these days is a tough order unless you have some business there, and on some bases wanting to take pictures is out of the question. A lot of Baltimore City FF's are USCG reservist and do their one weekend a month an Curtis Bay working at the fire station. Try and find one of thoose guys to set you up. That's your best bet.

I work in Howard County FD and fly planes out of Tipton. Did the military give up the airport station? And do you guys still have the crash truck, I believe someone called it a MACI? The reason I ask is I have seen AACo doing inspections, then the other day I saw a Fort Meade buggy going in the hangers and the office areas? Thanks and be safe.

Tipton Airfield is now Anne Arundel County's property. Fort Meade still has one crash truck and Howard County uses it as a foam unit. Fort Meade mainly uses it as a second reserve engine and a big brush truck.

Rescue 131,
I would really like to think that this is a photo from Fort Meade. It appeared on ebay so I downloaded the ebay image and also purchased one for my collection. In your research, have you ever seen reference to the 5th Motor Transport Company being at Meade during WWI? We know that GI's manned the fire equipment during the war and maybe this is a photo of one of them. FM had several of these Ford-Howe pumpers and a motorcycle w/sidecar. Does the building in the background look familiar? Anyway, let me know if you come up with anything and I'll repost the picture without the writting when I get it. Ted

I'm no history expert or imagery analyst, but the building in the left background of the picture looks like Nathan Hale Hall, located at 4554 Llew!!!!n Ave. Hale Hall is the Headquarters of the 902nd Military Intelligence Group - a unit I was assigned to from 1994-1996.

The Picture in the following link shows the Nathan Hale hall building(s) in the background
http://www.ftmeade.army.mil/Museum/Archive_BW_1930_Fire_Squad.htm

The one posted above however shows some of the brick quarters in the background, so I think that the building in question is the current DVQ building next to the library. I think this building was a hospital at one time...

redcat; That USA pumper built at Camp Holabird served at Fort Meade well into WWII. Still waiting for our Fort Meade expert, Rescue131 to offer his comments on the picture. Thanks to redcat & savage 7602 for their input.

I took a little drive around post this evening and couldn't match up any of the still existant buildings to the one in the picture, it's not the buidling I originally thought it was.

The Officer Housing in the background of the picture narrows down the area it would be in if it is/was on Meade, however after looking around I don't think its Meade

Ted, I wanted to check so info I had. I couln't find anything on the 5th Motor Transport Co. being at Ft. Meade, MD. The building does look a little like the old Corpsman's Qrts. on Llew!!!!n Ave. (now the DVQ) but the old hospital building should be located to the right of the photo if it were. Also the buildings in the background do not look like houses that would be near the old hospital (now Army Claims Serv) or the DVQ, so I'm guessing that this photo is not from Ft. Meade. It's not Nathan Hale Hall, as that building is much longer.
