Firefighter (three positions)
Fire Department - Storrs Campus

The University of Connecticut Fire Department at Storrs is currently seeking candidates to fill three Firefighter positions.


Duties include but are not limited to: Enter burning buildings and do search and rescue of trapped or injured occupants, be able to possess basic skills in fire fighting, delivery of emergency medical services, mitigate hazardous materials spills and leaks of hazardous substances, participate in fire prevention programs, inspect and complete reports on all University owned buildings, fire extinguisher inspections and servicing, testing fire alarms, inspect and maintain a fleet of emergency Fire Department vehicles. The Firefighter candidates will be expected to operate the fire department communications equipment, receive emergency telephone calls requesting fire department services and dispatch pertinent manpower and equipment.


Persons filling these positions must possess sufficient strength and stamina to carry heavy equipment, drag fire hoses filled with water into burning buildings and lift and carry an ambulance stretcher with a person on it.


The successful candidates must possess national certification by the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NPQS) or the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFACC) or State Certification by the Connecticut Fire Academy that meets the provisions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter 2. The candidates are expected to, at a minimum become certified as an EMT-B, maintain a CT Class 2Q operators license; complete an in-house 24 week Platoon Recruit training program and successfully complete the State of Connecticut Fire Academy Ten (10) week Firefighter Recruit Training Program. Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed the ten week training program.
