Seems these guys broke every rule in the book. Not sure from the sequence (not in order) and the story http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/article.jsp?id=40320&sectionId=45 what exactly the outcome was, but it seems that they may actually have made a decent stop inspite of themselves. Or maybe I don't know as much as I thought I did ;)

from the web link:

picture # 2

No Roof Ladder w/ consideration of fire volume under the roof to the right of the location they are on. As you look at the other pictures there obviously is NO fire wall in the cockloft.

Overall:

NO Trench Cut was done.

Unfortunately there are no pictures to show us the complete operation and the final outcome of the fire or even pictures that show us the scene from all sides to make a good critique of the incident.

I'm going to try this as the sequence:
The last picture is the 1st (aerial is going into op., the ground ladder not set to roof yet. Then the top two. Followed by the large photo of the stick flowing water just above the power lines. And the last pic. is the middle left.

1st: NO ROOF LADDER????? (death wish)

if they were going to attempt a trench cut, they weren't going to save much other than the last Apt.

Only 1 ladder to the building?? was no one inside?

Could be the angle, but the stick appears to be quite close to the power lines.

Not doing anything to protect the row of apartments to the right.

only 1 line being used in addition to aerial??

Probably didn't have anyone heeling the ladder to roof either.

That master stream pushed that fire through the building.

Were they trying to

A:Fall through the roof
B:Get electricuted by the power lines? (mmm....crispy critters!)
C:To spread fire to the whole attic area?
D:Burn he rest of the apartment complex down?

Too bad we can't see the opposite side of the building and the placement of the other operational crews. I am curious why they approached the ventilation from the direction that they did. Seems a little unproductive if they are not near the seat of the fire. Did they even ck the placement of the ladder that they did throw. Seems like it doesn't have the roper number rungs above roof level and not at proper angle.

Like others have said not able to really review the operations without views from other portions of the building and a list of ther going on not seen.

Fog nozzle on the ladder pipe = useless

In picture two on the link, why is there a handline being directed onto the roof shingles? Isn't their main purpose to, um, shed water??

It has already self vented through the roof...no sense in being on the roof to cut a hole if fire has already accomplished this for you.
No roof ladder to secure a foothold
