I was going to put this on the California site, but I don't think anyone looks in that one very often.
I was wondering what the US Forestry Service or California Forestry Fire Service do with their used Hotshot crew carries. You know the units that look like squad trucks but with seating for 8 or more personnel like a bus and their equipment and transport them to the scene of a brush or forest fire in the western states.
Do they sell them to the public or junk them.
I would like to get ahold of one and use it like a camper or a personal family or friends mover for trips and when its not being used for that take it to a parade.

The USFS & BLM both use thses rigs. When they are done with them they are surveyed. Typically first option goes to local fire departments who fight forest and range fires, second option they go to the pvt contract firefighting companies(yes there are a lot of them on the west coast). Next option is they are surveyed through GSA surplus. Usually if they get to the GSA they are worthless.

Sounds like where I work. I work for a public works garage as a supply clerk and get to see what happens to vehicles after they get used hard and for many years. When we get rid of something its due to go to the junk yard even thou they go to auction.
The fire service also does the samething here except they strip a unit clean before it goes to auction and some of them are junk.
