It depends on what you are on, the radio or the phone....
Radio, at least here in Allegany County Maryland.....it's just "Allegany County"
On the phone, it's "Allegany County Dispatch" on some lines, "Allegany County 9-1-1" on the 9-1-1 lines, and other lines are answered "Allegany County Emergency Services and Communications"
Thought ya would want to know.........

Well in Frederick and Montgomery counties, it is just that. I know that back in the seventies and early eighties, Montgomery was known as Headquarters. I like they way that sounds, but because someone in the field thought it sounded like ECC was "in charge" and for other reasons it changed to Montgomery. Which is probably best, because in my opinion in minimizes comfusion. I'm not sure if Frederick was ever refered to as Headquarters for any length of time or not.

 Typically, 911 (fire and rescue) Dispatch here is called resque.... however you will have an outsider come in and call them dispatch. All in who you are and where your from.
Now for the Sheriffs department in accomack... they are simply called accomack. That may have been the other incidents you were hearing.

"There is alot of things we'd like to call 'em....But the F.C.C. Has rules." LOL Good one!
In the northern Va area, we call our dispatch by what county we're in. Fairfax County is: "Fairfax", PWC is: "Prince William"..etc Although, when I worked at the NASCAR races in Richmond, dispatch was called "Radio."
Every place is different!

Prince George's County, MD
When you call in on the radio its the unit number to communications in reverse its communications to unit number.
If you call in on the med channel radio its Prince George's unit# to Prince Georges's Central
On the communications direct line when they pickup they say communications and who answers. If we pickup when it rings we just give the station # or the unit assigned to a station that has a separate direct line (Like a paramedic unit Medic 25, Medic 29......)
All calls are computer dispatch so each station has a printer which prints out the unit(units) responding, address, type of call then the call comes over the radio and the station alerting and paging system goes off.
Use to be all medic and local alarms started with communications ringing the station ask if there was a crew for ambulance, engine, brush unit, squad....give the address then put the call out over the air and then hit the alerting system. The printers came in later and now the whole system has changed to the above procedure.

Hmm...since there are 5 different 9-1-1 centers in Allegheny Co. PA. There's 5 different ways of doing it, oh...plus the ringdown centers that still dispatch. I know that Allegheny Co 9-1-1 center is known as "County" on the police, EMS and Fire radios. Althought the City Of Pittsburgh is now in the County center, they still use what they have been using for years, which I believe is "Communications" for Fire and EMS and "Base" or "Index" (when they need plates run) for Police.
Eastern Regional 9-1-1 in Allegheny Co also uses "Communications" for Fire and EMS and use "Radio" and "Index" for police. The other 9-1-1 centers and ringdown centers use something totally different and there are WAY to many to list or even try to figure out.

For Prince George's County and Howard County (both in MD, between DC and Baltimore), it's "Communications" (but PG really should be lack of Communications). Montgomery County, MD is "Montgomery" (noodle scratcher there, huh?).
Rumor has it that Howard will be switching to calling themselves Howard.

Here in Southwest VA each locality is a little different. Some use the county name, some use control, and some use some completely different call names. Also most of the Roanoke Valley agencies use the correct speaking protcol on the radio. Meaning, unit you are calling and then the unit calling. EX: If Roanoke Engine 13 was attempting to contact dispatch it would go as follows: "Control, Engine 13"
Roanoke City is "Control."
Roanoke County is "Control."
Franklin County is "Franklin" on Fire/Rescue Channels and "Control" on PD Channels.
Bedford County is "Bedford"
Pittsylvania County is "CECOM" (CEntral COMmunications).
Danville City is "EOC."

All of our dispatch centers are changing to Dispatch as part of ICS. My understanding is that it should eventually be nationwide so that no matter where you are called to operate you don't have to worry about what to call them, just call then Dispatch.

NIMS standards dicate (or recommend) that field units refer to communications centers in a way that identifies the jurisdiction involved, for the purpose of interoperability. Many Maryland counties are compliant already. Harford County took a step backward when they switched to their 800mhz system a few years back. They had been refered to as "Harford County" by sheriff units, but switched to "dispatch" on both fire and PD sides so they could be more like their buddies on the other side of the Gunpowder.
Here's a good list for most of central and eastern MD:
Anne Arundel County: "FIRE ALARM"
BWI Airport: "FIRE CONTROL"
Baltimore County: "DISPATCH"
Baltimore City: "COMMUNICATIONS" (There was a push to change to "BALTIMORE FIRE" a number of years ago, for NIMS compliance, but it didn't stick)
Carroll County: "CARROLL"
Cecil County : "DISPATCH" but have also heard "CECIL"
Dorchester County: "DORCHESTER CENTRAL"
Frederick County: "FREDERICK"
Harford County: "DISPATCH"
Howard County: "HOWARD"
Kent County: "KENT CENTRAL"
Wicomico County: "CENTRAL" or "WICOMICO CENTRAL"
Worcester County: "CENTRAL" or "WORCESTER CENTRAL"
Ocean City: "OCEAN CITY"
Montgomery County: "MONTGOMERY"
