I was wondering if anyone knew where my dept could get a real federal q for our newest engine. It came with the electronic siren and it sounds like shit. We are looking to buy a real one to get the sound we want coming from our engine. Our other apparatus has the real "q" and its just not the same hearing that POS one coming down the road. The department I run with here at college has all true "q's" and its so sad to go home and not hear the real one on our first run engine, and we have wanted one since we aquired it in 2002. Any suggestions or reccomendations would be appreciated.

If you are looking for a new one check this site out. http://www.fedsig.com/products/index.php?id=111
If you want a used one check out ebay. there is a lot of them on there usually.

You may wanna try something else. Federal Q uses too much electricity and it's manual, you'll have to be pressing the button or pedaling it all the time. Here's a kind of pneumatic siren, it's the same loud as Q, but it saves a lot of energy and it's automatic. http://www.maxbmartin.de/start.html
Go to that website, click "produkte" (it's in German), and then click "Martin-Horn 2297 GM" (don't click the "2097 GM", that's the model for ambulances, not firetrucks), and there comes the information (both German and English) of that kind of siren. Here's a video of that type of siren

You can contact that company, or you may wanna find it on e-bay if it's cheaper.

So why is a Q junk? Maybe the newer model could be in that classfication but the older ones are still good.
Those that have been on the appratus that my old dept have used for years have been very good in moving traffic. Along with the Grovers they are great.
That may be great for England and those overseas, but this is the US, we use the real thing.
BTW - I bet the city of Indianapolis doesn't use these!!
Never did like the ambulance noise maker.

Martin-Horns are louder than both Grover horn and Federal Q. I believe it's at least 3 decibels louder than Q. And it's full automatic, you don't need to be pedaling or pressing the button all the time like the Q does. And it only uses 1/6 of the electricity Federal Q does, which means it can be used on small appratus too, unlike the Q.
