Yes, for Units owned by the State, CDF, they are numbered with a four letter number such as you see on this unit(San Luis Obispo County)
they breakdown to geographical areas of California,
CDF breaks the state into four regions, 1,2,3,4
1, is the coast of Northern California, from Oregon to Santa Cruz County,
2. is the interior part of Northern California from Oregon, following the Nevada State line down to the American river(Sacramento) The Sacramento River divides region 1 from 2(give or take a county line)
3, is all of Southern California that CDF has Units in(LA, Ventura, Orange, have limited CDF units) and includes San Luis Obispo(Central Coast)
4. Is all of the Sierra Nevada foothills and west too the Cental Coast.
the first number is the region the engine is from
the second number is the Unit the engine is from
the third is the type of drivetrain-two wheel drive is a 7/8/9 number, four wheel drive is 5/6 number.
the last number used to be the battalion the engine was assigned too but many places dont follow that here in the south part of the state, It also can designate what type of engine it is, a 7 can be a traditional wildland engine, a 8 can be a interface engine and a 9 can be a interface/structure engine or in some places a water tender/tanker(east coast term)
Our contract engines are a whole diffferent story I will get to when I do some more photos

Actually the 3rd number denotes what model the engine is.
IE an 8 is a model 9. A 6 is a 14, a 7 is 15 etc.
