Here is a picutre of the department we are raising money for! This is all that is left of their firehouse, the cement slab it was built on!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY IF YOU WANT YOUR MONEY OR DONATION TO GO TO A VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT!

I got this from a friend who lives in NY, and is collecting money and equipment for the departments down there! She just got back from her second trip down.

I met and spoke with Rocky Pullman, the head of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors, when he came by the West Hancock Fire Rescue trailer office the next evening to check on the big wood fire that was still burning. He has a house in Pearlington. He told me what Kim Jones had, that the tax base has collapsed in Hancock County and that the county budget will be down by something more than 40% next year, maybe 60%, if my notes are right. Pretty sobering. That means that the volunteer departments are going to be in serious need of financial support to get them through the coming lean period. They each just got a payment from the county which should get them through the next few months, but after that I believe that things are very uncertain.

Please let any volunteer fire departments that you speak to know that this is the case. If they have any questions, they can certainly reach "Hooty" (Brian Adams) the Director of the county's Emergency Management Agency at : 228-466-8200. He lives and works at the EOC center in the picture below. I know that even small cash donations would make a difference.

However - and this is important - if anything is donated through the Hancock County Firefighters Association - as Hootie would prefer - it must be earmarked clearly for "volunteer firefighters" or have an accompanying letter designating it as such. Donations can be earmarked for a specific department as well. Otherwise, the donation will not necessarily go to the volunteers, it will go into the general firefighter fund which includes paid departments.

There are eight volunteer departments in Hancock County. The four south of I-10 were badly damaged by the storm, some lost their buildings, some their vehicles, some lost some or all of both. East Hancock and Claremont Harbor lost their buildings outright, West Hancock lost one in the storm and their other was was badly damaged. The Army Corps is about to take it down, so they are about to lose it too.
