I haven't checked lately, but it's possible. Are you ex-military? Have you already been to the DoD Fire School at Goodfellow AFB? Ninety-nine percent of the time, an Air Force base fire department won't even look at a candidate who hasn't already been to Goodfellow, since the pool of applicants will be full of Goodfellow graduates who already meet/exceed the required qualifications (IFSAC Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Pumper, Haz-Mat Operations and depending on the base, EMT). Most AF depts hire civilians at the driver/operator level (GS-6 or 7 depending on if you are a EMT or Haz-Mat technician).
With the exception of a couple of guys in my department (MacDill AFB Fire-Rescue), all of our civil service guys are ex-AF. The two exceptions have been working in civil service over thirty years and are about to retire.
To apply you'll have to get on the civil service website and go from there.

Take a look at afpc website. I think there are or were two term. gs-5s open but as for training. The main thing that gets you into DOD is arff. if you dont have that then it is really difficult to get any AF fd. It doesnt matter if you goodfellow training or not as long as you have the right training.

gotchya. i was actually in the Coast Guard for ....4 weeks. i got a medical discharge due to a heart condition called SVT. I've since had it corrected. but I don't think 4 weeks into basic training is the military service they are looking for anyways.
I appreciate the help guys
by the way, where are the AF Fire training schools and how would a civilian get in one?

Any school that is IFSAC approved will transfer to a DOD cert. As for the Goodfellow school, that is in San Angelo TX......right in the middle of nowhere.
