It's hard to believe that they finished last season with a losing record and are now the BEST team in the NFL. I know that they have the same record as the Patriots & the Eagles but they beat both of them. That makes them THE TEAM TO BEAT in the NFL.

Respect. Big Ben has earned it. The defense, while still a little weak in short pass coverage, really stepped up yesterday. It looks like the Blitzburgh defense is finally back, with a vengance.

I loved watching T.O. and McNabb having their discussion/argument. Sorry T.O., how do you expect McNabb to get the ball to you when 1) you were seldom open, and 2) he had a sea of black and gold climbing up his ass all day.

Watch the stock market today. I predict Oakley stock will be going through the roof, at least in Pittsburgh. Why? As the old saying goes,

THE FUTURE'S SO BRIGHT WE HAVE TO WEAR SHADES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO STEELERS!!

Shows what can also happen when the offensive line is healthy. Last year was bad from the start with O-line injuries in training camp. Not to mention Simmon's being diagnosed with diabetes and losing over 30lbs during camp. He was playing through that all season getting it under control and getting back to playing weight. This year they're just pushing defenses around and opening up huge holes for the running game.

As i stated on the Allegheny COunty thread Hog, it was a spir of the moment thing that happened, and Porter threw an awesome left hook!

While I do not promote this type of thing, if someone spits in my face, the same results would have happened, and I am sure many others out there would agree. Is there anymore disrespect than someone spitting in anothers face?

First, how does losing Porter for a game hurt the team? The Steelers have lost several key players this year and don't seem the worse for wear.

Second, define "pro". These guys are professional athletes. Most of these guys went to college to play football to improve and expose themselves for movement to the next level. Many of them just happened to pick up a degree along the way. Most do not. Many of these guys were, and still are, street punks at heart. The fact that some people choose to idolize them is irrevelavent to them. My son is a fairly good football player. He emulates his favorite players but does not use them as role models for life. Why? Because I discourage that. I try to steer him to role models that will help him through the total picture, not just the football frame in the movie that is his life. These "pros" are making big money to play a game because they have a talent to play that game well. Most could care less whether we think they do the right thing.

Finally, do not compare professional football to college or high school football. The NFL includes an "entertainment factor" not found in the other levels. Just look at the hype before and during an NFL game. The dress code alone is designed so the players look good for the TV cameras. You don't find this at the college level, and many schools have the money to produce the hype. Professional football is part game, part entertainment.

I'm sure rap fans will disagree. Let me ask you this...Why do many people watch NASCAR? Is it for the strategy of the racers or for the chance to see a big wreck? The accidents are part of the sport and most people, while not wishing anybody injured, enjoy the brief rush from seeing a 3200 lb car collide with another object at a high rate of speed. Incidents like the one involving Porter are part of the NFL. These guys are not sportsmen, they are paid entertainers who happen to play football. Don't get me wrong, I love football and am a huge Steelers fan. You just can't put the same level of sportsmanship on the NFL as you do with lower level football. That fight was part of the entertainment package for the afternoon, given the rivalry between the Browns and the Steelers. What Porter did was part of his game, accept it. He was fined by the league. What else should they do, suspend him?

I'm also a long-time Steeler fan. I however, disagree with you omaha. The owners and coaches need to seize control of the game back from the players. In any other industry the owners/supervisors set the rules. In this, the NFL should be no different. I love the passion that Joey brings to the team. This, however, doesn't cloud my judgement. When Bam Morris was jacked-up for an ounce of pot, Dan Rooney got rid of him. That's the kind of moral course that Steelers fans should respect. They really are different than any other franchise. I guess you don't own a business for 71 years without being special. To answer your last question, yes, I think Cowher should sit Porter down against the Bengals. Whether or not they want to be, all professional athletes are role models for our children, and as such, should act accordingly.

PS: See you'uns at Heinz on the 28th!!!! :D

First, I never said I agreed with the situation, only accepting it for what it is. There is a big difference between an ounce of pot and throwing a fist during pre-game warm-ups. They should have hung Bam out to dry, he never did bounce back. Are you blaming Porter because you are a Steeler fan...If you were a Browns fan who would you be blaming. This was a big rivalry even after the old Browns moved to Baltimore. Things were said in the heat of the moment and tempers flared. As far as these guys being role models, read my earlier post. If a parent allows a son to idolize these guys to the point they become role models, then their parents are to blame, not the professional athlete. You cannot expect somebody in those positions to lose the cockiness and play role model to the kids. Some can and do, most do not.

Bam should have been dropped before he got nailed with drugs!

Porter was caught up in the heat of the moment, and there isnt ONE person on these threads that never lost their cool at one point of time in their lifetime. Porter was already handelled appropriately. He was thrown out of the game and fined 10k.

Steelers 38 - Cincy 25

Porter will play his butt off, as he has been doing. Get off of Porters back. He has been taken care of. Now it is back to football!!!

LETS GO STEELERS!!!

I was at Heinz Field yesterday, only to see my high school team lose in the WPIAL finals 15 to 14. Now, I have to rely on the Steelers the rest of the season for all the excitement!!!

PS. Nice thing about High School ball...the kids play their behinds off for free!

Truck123,

I agree about Bam. I also agree about high school football. I had the misfortune of watching our local HS (undefeated to that point) drop their second round game at home in overtime last week. These kids play the game, no hype involved.

Good job by the Steelers, 19-14. Ben had a taste of good defense, still stayed in the game, rattled but did not fall apart.

Ben did not bring his A game. Had he, the game would have been a blowout.

We can NOT make the same mistakes againt the Pats. If we do, kiss the one for the thumb goodbye. While it would still be an excellent season, you give the Patriots those two field goals, 99% of the time they both go good.

I believe this is the game that our O and D play well.

I am tired of biased, short bus refs. Fire them all and start over. I hope they had trouble leaving the stadium last night. My feet finally thawed out sometime this morning. If the Pats plane crashes on the way home, do we get to go by default??? Another reason I hate those New England teams. Red Sox and Patriots.

I will say it again as I have before. THE NFL IS FIXED. And TV anouncers are biased, call the damn game don't favor anyone team.

We are still at war, and there was a patriotic theme for yesterday's game, Marine Corps. Band playing before the game, Lee Greenwood singing for the troops watching in Iraq, each military branch represented before the game. Let's send the Red, White, and Blue team again. 2 words ...... ROOKIE QUARTERBACK

I have always been, and will always be a Steeler fan, but, lets face it, the Pats took advantage of 3 major ROOKIE mistakes, and they capitalized on them. Do I think the better team won, HELL NO. I do however think the Pats played a better game.
I have a lot of respect for Cower and his staff but, come on, 4th & 1 and you dont run a keeper play? As frustrated as Big Ben was I think they should have brought Maddox in before the end of the 3rd quarter. The change, if nothing else, would have put the Pats back on their heels, at least for a short time, until they adjusted to his style.
Alas, in the words of the Grateful Dead .... "What a long, strange trip it's been." I could not have enjoyed the season any more, unless, of course, we went all the way.
I will be watching and rooting for the OTHER Pennsylvania team. Not because I hate the Pats, ....... well..... yeah, because I hate the Pats.

See you all next training camp.

Example # 1- Todd Heap injured his ankle last year attempts to line up so the next play can be stopped and #55 Porter pushes him to the ground knowing he is hurt.

Example #2- Anytime an opponet runs out of bounds and there is a stellers player close by bang late hit

Pa. Town Changes Name to Support Steelers (http://adelphia.net/news/read.php?id=12532503&ps=1020&lang=en)
Saturday, January 28, 2006 7:18 AM EST
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (AP) — Just to make sure there's no confusion about which team they are supporting in the Super Bowl XL, the mayor and council voted unanimously to change this city's name.

Welcome to Steeler, Pennsylvania.

The name change for the city of about 15,000 people south of Pittsburgh will last through Feb. 5, the day of the football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks in Detroit.

"I know the folks in the state of Washington are rooting for the Seahawks, so we wanted to make sure everyone knows the city of Washington is fully in support of the Steelers," Mayor Kenneth J. Westcott told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Anyone sending bills, cards or letters should continue addressing them to Washington, however, because the name change is cosmetic and not recognized by the U.S. Postal Service.

"It's just a spoof until after the Super Bowl," Westcott told the newspaper.

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died.

When he got to heaven, God was showing him around.

They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts

flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity, Peyton." said God.

"This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here."

Peyton felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just

around the corner. It was a three story mansion with a

blue and white sidewalk, a 50 foot tall flag pole with an enormous Seahawks
flag, and in every window a blue Towel.

Peyton looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I
have a question. I was an all-pro quarterback, I hold many NFL records, and
I even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said, "So what's your point Peyton?"

"Well, why does Matt Hasselbeck get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said, "Peyton, that's not Matt's house, it's mine."

Spotlight Bright on Super Bowl Referees (http://adelphia.net/news/read.php?ps=1013&id=12543561)
Wednesday, February 1, 2006 6:18 PM EST
The Associated Press
By ANDREA ADELSON

DETROIT (AP) — They're the guys in black and white. No names needed. Unless they make a bad call.

Then, everyone finds out who these NFL officials are. Criticized and vilified, their eyesight and sanity are called into question. And a lot of them are making names for themselves lately.

In a postseason filled with questionable calls, the spotlight will be harsher than ever for referee Bill Leavy and his officiating crew when Pittsburgh plays Seattle on Super Bowl Sunday.

"What we want to do is to pick up the paper Monday and read about the game, not the officiating," said Mike Pereira, who oversees NFL refs. "We all want to be anonymous."

That can be tough sometimes. With more than 130 million people watching the Super Bowl in 234 countries around the world, a wrong move can lead to outrage.

"There's no such thing as perfection. Mistakes happen," Jerry Markbreit, the only person to be the head referee in four Super Bowls, said Wednesday. "Officials are so hard on themselves. When they make a mistake, nobody feels worse than they do."

Pete Morelli and his seven-man crew found out firsthand while working the Indianapolis-Pittsburgh playoff game last month.

Morelli overturned an interception by Steelers safety Troy Polamalu on video review late in the game, and it nearly cost them. Pittsburgh held on to win 21-18 — linebacker Joey Porter later said the officials tried to cheat them out of a victory, and the NFL said Morelli made a mistake.

A few days later, a rock was thrown through the front window at Morelli's home in Stockton, Calif. Police said it was unclear whether the vandalism was related to his school job or his role as a referee.

In Denver's 27-13 win over New England on Jan. 16, the Broncos' first touchdown was set up by a 39-yard pass interference call on Asante Samuel in the end zone. Replays showed contact by both players and Patriots coach Bill Belichick was irate.

"I don't really complain about the refs too much," Seattle cornerback Andre Dyson said. "We're all human. They don't get to see instant replay on every play. The biggest thing is not to make a crucial call to change the outcome of the game."

Super Bowl officials are picked based on their regular-season performance. They must have worked five full seasons in the NFL, and cannot work consecutive Super Bowls.

Most officials wait about 10 years before getting called up to the big game. Many never make it there.

Retired official Bob McElwee, the head referee for three Super Bowls, recalled being on the road in Maryland when he got the news that he got his first assignment.

"I must have jumped out of the phone booth," McElwee said this week while on vacation in Hawaii. "My dad was sitting in the car looking at me, he saw me holding my fist in the air."

Like the players, officials can get nervous. But that can also make them better, McElwee said.

"The pressure raises you a level," he said. "Sure you know what it is. But doggone it, I always felt if I was properly prepared and I was ready, I was going to be OK. The nature of this business is you're not always going to be right.

"But do you see a quarterback who is right all the time? Of course not. If you're properly prepared, you'll do a good job. If not get out of the business."

Markbreit said he was "scared to death" before his first one in 1983. He wept on the sideline before his last one, realizing that would be his final Super Bowl. He retired in 1998.

Jerry Seeman worked two Super Bowls and later was head of officiating. He especially remembered the New York Giants' 20-19 win over Buffalo in 1991 when Scott Norwood missed a field goal at the end.

"You didn't even know we were on the field," Seeman said in a telephone interview from his winter home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. "That's what you love to have happen. You understand what your role is, you contribute to the success of the game, but you're not out there to get the credits or the discredits or what it is that happens. You want to stay out of it."

To prepare for the Super Bowl, the crew is sent videos of both teams so they can become more familiar with the formations and alignments. The officials arrive for the game Thursday and for the only time all season are allowed to bring their families with them.

On Friday, they start reviewing more video, then go to the field and practice the coin toss. Yes, even that has to be perfect.

They really start focusing on the game Saturday, going through all-day meetings where Pereira will go over points of emphasis and also review calls made in the playoff games.

That means he will explain to the crew why Morelli was wrong to overturn the interception in the Colts-Steelers game.

"I had several big-time mistakes," Markbreit said. "I felt at the time that it happened, 'Why am I here?' You're heartsick about a call that you made. You want everything to be perfect. But it's not a perfect science. There's nothing perfect."

Roethlisberger admits: 'I don't think I got in'

Before David Letterman got to shave Ben Roethlisberger's beard Monday night, he got the Steelers' Super Bowl-winning quarterback to admit a little something that might rankle Seahawks fans even more.

Roethlisberger told Letterman that he didn't think he scored on a controversial play in the second quarter that put the Steelers ahead for good 7-3. Roethlisberger dove toward the end zone but didn't appear to get the ball to touch the goal line. But officials on the field signaled touchdown.
"I told Coach, 'I don't think I got in,'" Roethlisberger told Letterman. "But we were getting ready to go for it on fourth down anyway, and I would have run it again. So we would have found a way to get in."

The play infuriated Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and has provided Seattle fans plenty of fodder for their fury over the game's questionable calls.

Referee Bill Leavy upheld the call after a replay review, and Holmgren then upbraided Leavy on his way off the field at halftime.

Holmgren walked over to Leavy, a fifth-year referee calling his first Super Bowl, and could be seen angrily telling him, "It wasn't even close."

Host David Letterman (left) shaves Steelers' QB Ben Roethlisberger on the set of The Late Show with David Letterman. (AP Photo/CBS, J.P. Filo / Associated Press)

Later on his Late Show appearance, the Pittsburgh quarterback got a shave from Letterman, finally ridding himself of the scraggly light brown facial hair he's been growing since the Steelers lost to Cincinnati in October.

"I was so mad that we lost the game," Roethlisberger told Letterman. "I kind of went into a depression and didn't shave and we ended up winning the next game. And I am kind of superstitious — just a little bit to people who know me — but we won that game and I said I am just going to keep it going until we lose and we kept it going.

"I don't really like the beard you know. But we were winning so I had to keep it going."

Letterman's deadpan reply, "Really? Honestly, I think it looks like a million bucks."

Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, when the Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 on Sunday night. He passed for 123 yards and ran for a touchdown.

"The worst part about winning the AFC championship game was that I had to keep (the beard) for two more weeks," he said. "I didn't want to do that."

After the interview, Letterman asked a woman from Pittsburgh who was in the audience to help him shave Roethlisberger.

"You want to take a little off?" Letterman asked the Steelers' fans.

Mom, you are right. but I think hog was trying to start an opinion of sorts on the anthem which played no part in the winner/loser of the game.

my point of the thread was how disgusting it was sang......how that when it is sung people should stand at attention not sway back and forth like a disco.....see how it has nothing to do with football now mom?

Without a doubt the singing of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl was not only disresprctful but a discrace to say the least.

It was presented in poor taste , without consideration of what the anthem stands for. Seems like we'll take anything and try and make soul or R & B out of it. -- And people actually cheered in the stadium. WOW

some of the calls were close but pushing off a defender = offenseive pass interferance
Big Ben TD was a TD because the ball touch the plane of the goal line=TD
the Holding penalty .....well that speaks for itself the offensive player had his arm locked on the defender = offensive holding
now the chop block was a blown call.......but so was the 2 Seattle fumbles.....one was a no call the other overturned.....so it wqent both ways
even if all the calls wen`t in Seattle`s favor they still would of lost
less than 50% on their 3ed down converstions
their clock management totally sucked
so i say Seattle lost because they got beat by Big Plays.and made none....their kicker missed 2 fieldgoals......and their recievers made a couple catches out of bounds

so bottom line PITTSBURGH STEELERS SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS

i think the seahawks are just whining and sore losers!! the whole game was not won because of the refs! there were only a few close calls but i thought the rule was when under review if the the play on the feild was not clear and definite in the review then the ruling on the feild stood!!! so if that is the case then the refs didn't blow the game!! and even if big bens close TD didnt count we still would have won!!! and anyways they are wasting their loser breath because the NFL gave an official statement saying no refs did anything wrong on the officiating of the game...so its time for them to get the hell over it!
