Gas 'Pill' Challenged
May 19, 2006, 10:06 AM EDT
Gas prices are only getting worse with the price of regular topping $3 a gallon.

Most people say they'll do 'anything' to get relief at the pump. We told you about a local man who said he found a way -- a gas "pill" that you drop in your tank with each fill up.

Now those claims are being challenged and the company who sells them is in some trouble.

The pill promised that if you put it into your gas tank your mileage could improve 25 percent and with the high prices, people were buying it.

The company is out of Irving, Texas and Mario Davis sold them in Connecticut.

It changes the molecular structure of the fuel so it burns at a lower flash point, but Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott isn't buying it.

"If you have purchased one of these products, I want you to know you have been duped out of your money," he says.

Abbott is suing the company that makes the pill -- Bioperformance. He says it does nothing to increase gas mileage and is made out of the same thing moth balls are -- Napthlene -- which can be dangerous.

What's more, he says the pills are being sold through a pyramid scheme.

A Texas judge has ordered Bioperformance to stop selling the gas pills and has frozen the company's assets.

If you bought Bioperformance gas pills in Connecticut -- Attorney General Richard Blumenthal wants to talk to you. He's investigating whether any laws have been broken here.

My cousins husband had a stroke in April, the Dr now suspects his use of this pill in his car as the cause. PLEASE be careful!!!!

Just a little update, as I got an email today from a person who sells these little pills. Seems the company has told the people selling it for them that it is not dangerous and they have no worries aobut using it or selling it. does this sound safe to anyone:

NAPHTHALENE
Naphthalene, also known as tar camphor, is a white crystalline solid with a distinctive mothball odor. Naphthalene is available to the public as a pest repellent and is frequently contained in mothballs, mothflakes, and toilet bowl deodorizers.
Napthalene can enter your system through inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and eye and skin contact. Napthalene may produce possible damage to eyes, liver, kidneys, skin, red blood cells, and the central nervous system. Hemolytic anemia, caused by the breakdown of the red blood cells, has been reported following immediate and long-term exposure. Infants exposed to clothes, blankets, and diapers stored in naphthalene mothballs are at risk for hemolytic anemia. Mild degrees of anemia often cause only slight symptoms like a lack of energy and fatigue. In more severe cases, hemolytic anemia can cause acute kidney failure.

Not one of those possibilities sounds like a risk I want to take. Especially when so far the evidence shows the gas pill does NOT increase your mileage.
