Two Fires, Hours Apart, Damage Apartment, Garage

Courant Staff Report

August 27 2006

Two early-morning fires erupted 3½ hours apart Saturday in adjacent Stafford Springs buildings, heavily damaging a wooden apartment building and an adjacent garage but causing no injuries.

Firefighters were called at 1:46 a.m. to a blaze that engulfed a two-car garage next to a 2½-story apartment house at 5 Brown Ave., a short distance from Route 190. They extinguished the fire and left about 4 a.m., said Neil Sedlak, chief of the Staffordville Volunteer Fire Department.

But "then we were called back to the same residence at 5:22 a.m.," Sedlak said. This time, the two-unit apartment house near the garage was on fire. "The back section of it was pretty much lost," Sedlak said. The building was rendered uninhabitable for the one family living there, he said. A second apartment was vacant.

The fires' causes were undetermined Saturday. Sedlak said that the state fire marshal was investigating, but that so far there was no indication of "suspicious" circumstances.

About eight firetrucks were on the scene, Sedlak said.

Hey chief, how was Mickey? I know, I'm being a smart ass

Sounds like exposures were not protected or checked. Stafford has had quite a few fires so far this 06.

Miss EMTmom....sorry I couldnt make your gathering...hope you all had a good time...inquizative minds in whackerville have a question....was the 2nd fire right next door to where the 1st fire occured.....and also heard there wasnt much to do with tower 144 as the building was in a heap upon arrival....true/false....thanks...

I dont think that truck company op's would have made a difference in this instance. A quick scan of the building with a thermal imager would have indicated any hot spots or areas of concern. I know exactly 0% of what exactly happened at this call. I can just only imagine what may have happened because I have witnessed similar where I am.

We had fun hon, hope you can get your butt here next year!
2nd fire was the house right behind the garage that burned. State fire marshal is doing the investigation. The tower was working from what I saw on the news, it was set up in the driveway behind the house. I was home with the kids, and didn't make it to the scene. I'm not sure who was in the house, but I did hear from one of the aux,. members that the FF's did rescue the little boys fish. People were shocked that the fish were still alive. Channel 3 and 30 both showed the truck in action. I do know when they arrived on scene of the garage the roof was already caved in, I believe the back of the house was fully involved when they arrived for the second call. 1/2 of the house was lost in the fire, the other half was supposed to be knocked down yesterday. House belonged to the first selectmans son, they mentioned there was no insurance, but I'm unsure if they meant on the house. Or if the tenants had no apt. insurance.

Why was one of the chief officer's yelling at T-144??? I was listen from work and you would of thought they ran a group of people over. The transmission was "Truck 144, STop!STop!Stop!Stop!"

OK, hubby said all he can think of is that after the back of the building was gone, they were spraying water into the attic. Appearently the water was going into the attic, out a front window and across the street onto someones lawn. There is no house directly across from the one that burned so it was the guys back lawn that was being wet down with the attic.
I might add the st. is a one lane st., so not very far to the neighbors yard.

Well this radio transmission was early in the fire, could it had been the officer positioning the truck for an exterior attack? I know sometimes people do get excited when they are at a fire!

Of course he wasn't on the truck, so could be he was busy with somehting else at the time.

Apparently, after speaking to the personnel involved, Staffordville Command had OK'd the application of the master stream from the truck and verified that interior crews had cleared the building. Apparently, this was not the case as there was one crew that had not exited for reasons yet unknown. Hence the tramnsmission of "Stop" to the truck.
