From the US Navy WWII. American LaFrance delivered 50 of these rigs built on the GM CCKW 2 1/2 ton 6x6 chassis. Both open and closed cab chassis were used. The open cab version was equipped with a front mounted wench. AmLaFr built the fire fighting equipment which was then mounted in the cargo bed of the truck. A tailboard was also attached to the chassis. The truck held 250 gals of water and was equipped with a hose bed and two booster reels. A Navy 500 gpm skid type gasoline powered pump was mounted midship on the chassis. Mounted on the tailboard was a mechanical powder type foam maker.

The attached pictures were takin at a base camp on the Kuwait/Iraq border. The "Fire Wagon" was the only portable fire protection we had. The wagon had a small Honda pump on the back and had a couple hundred feet of 1 1/2 hose. If a fire emergency broke out we would connect the it to an available Hummer and pull it to the emergency. The only way we could fill it was from stand pipes tapped into a well so there wasn't much pressure. Luckily we didn't have any emergencies arise where we needed it. Being a firefighter from Kansas I thought this was an interesting piece.

Most unusual looking building for a federal fire station. But if you are sure it is from an Army or military base FD, I would say it would have to be from one of the very old bases, possibly Rock Island Arsenal, Ill or Watervilet Arsenal, NY.

3rd District
04-28-2004, 08:46 AM
Steve and Mike,

I have to agree, very unusual fire station for a Army post from that era. I have rulled out Fort Monroe, Rock Island, Camp Robinson, Fort Sill and Watervilet. All these post had large stone or brick fire stations during WW I, but I have pictures of those. Most other camps/post had the typical wooden, one story stations. Camps/post that had been around before WW I is the likley guess. I would guess West Point. I have an AmLaFr list of deliveries from the era and I will have to go to see what post had these rigs and try to come up with something. I have sent a copy of Steve's photo to the West Point museum to see if they can id it.

Steve, did you win the fire box picture from E-bay? Info that has come my way says that it is Balto City, Box 5, Light and Redwwod Sts in downtown Balto. The box would have been located about 2 blocks from where the Balto Convention is now.

Ted,

I don't think it is West Point, but possible I guess. Many of the pre WW I military fire stations ended up being converted stable and/or carriage house buildings. Looking at the picture I would say thst this was a municiple fire station that maybe a nearby Army base shared quarters with for one reason or another.

3rd District
04-29-2004, 10:33 AM
Mike,

That's what makes researching military post, fire stations and fire apparatus so interesting. Without records, we can only guess on these things. West Point e-mailed me back with a number to call for further info, guess I'll follow up on this at some point. I'm going to send a copy of the photo to Jack Calderone from Fire Apparatus Journel, he may be able to come up with something.

Steve, always amazes me with some of the pictures he comes up. He has also posted a great shot from Camp Lee on the Youngstown Forum. Steve is the man when it comes to fire apparatus and has provided me with lots of info in the past.

I would really like to see someone come up with pictures of Fort Meades WW II era stations that we don't already have.

Hi,

It may turn out that this isn't a military base. I'm assuming (yes I know not to!) that it was a military facility because of the WWI era military uniforms on a couple of the folks in the photo. The ALF is also of a style that was used by the USQMC. I've had this photo for 20 years or so and I just can't figure out the location....

Yes Ted I did bid on that photo, but someone wanted the picture more than me!

I appreciate the responses.

Gentlemen, 2 questions, if I may. How in the heck did that unit end up in Baltimore? And, anyone know where it went? Here's the story. The Ford heritage is pretty plain, but the rest of it was built by Marmon-Herrington. It found it's way into the surplus property system at Jessup, Md. and was acquired by the Riverdale Heights VFD in PG County in about 1971-2. It ran good, but it was an empty shell. Charlie Black (Potomac Fire Equip) was the Asst Chief then, I was a Captain. The two of us, with a good bit of help, painted it White over Red, added a 100gpm PTO Pump, 175 gal. tank, 5000w Generator, Etc. The booster reel carried 150 ft. of 3/4 hose, and there were several Circle D lights mounted on the box. It ran as E135, and was used as a Brush/Light Rescue unit for several years. I left 13 in '75, and lost track of the apparatus dispositions as they went thru a number of changes.

Again, from the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, same apparatus, different view, now including a Navy ambulance. I believe the Chemical Cars were manufactured by either Ford-Pirsch or Ford-Minnisota Fire Apparatus. The pumper is a 1918 Seagrave. Both buildings in the background were used as the fire station

A new website has come on line dealing with the Military Fire Fighters that served with the US Army during WWII. Jim Davis served with the 1204th Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon during the war and he has created a very interesting site " Fire Fighters In Fatigues" Please visit, www.maui.net/~r11/

Ted, This photo may be from NAS Glynco, GA. When I was there the firehouse had a two story main building with two bays facing the main road and something like 8 drive through bays along the back one story addition like this one pictured. The very back single story addition was offices.

A little history for the guys at Fort Meade. This is Coporal Harry B Fyffe. Harry served as a military fire fighter at Fort Meade Fire Station 3 early on in the war. WWII fire station 3 was located just off Annapolis Rd nr. Clark Rd. Before it was torn down, it was occupied by EOD. Harry was then deployed overseas and served with the 1991st Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon The 1991st saw service in North Africa and Italy. The next picture, which I have posted before shows members of the 1991st with their Class 135 crash trucks in North Africa. Thanks to Captain John for the bio on Harry
