What Makes a Volunteer Fire Chief?

So, I know I'm opening up a can of worms with this, BUT, my question is:

what makes a good volunteer fire chief?

Some feel being everyones friend makes a good chief, Some feel as long as I get all my firefighters what they need makes a good fire chief. Some feel if I yell and bark orders that makes a good chief. the louder they yell, the better. what are you opinions? I will give my answer after I have received some feedback. (Please leave current fire chiefs names and personnel opinions about these chiefs out of this) I (and some others don't want to hear it :D )

A little bit of everything I guess. You will never have a perfect chief

1- most important, understanding fire, what it can do and when
2- understandng your members
knowing when to yel and when not to.
get both sides of the story.
Fight for what 's right and try to explain when things are not right.
Listen to what they ALL have to say.
Stand up for your members and get the stiff they need, not always the stuff they want!
3- work with them, help pull/pack the hose, wash the truck after a call.

A good chief will not be liked by all, all the time.

Pretty sad when a EMS LT, knows more about a tower truck on what it can and can not do than half of the officers !!! Stay tuned more to come......

Almost sounds like the position the EMS LT is in, is a waste of knowledge, but hey I never ran a fire before.

Costing taxpayers less for the same work, not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing, however there is nothing wrong with refurb trucks.........Do the math, and the cost, I guess saving money should not be a option to taxpayers.. HELLO!!!!
