WATERBURY, Conn. -- Officials released funeral plans for a Waterbury firefighter who died from his injuries after a crash involving two firetrucks.

Capt. John Keane died on Tuesday afternoon from injuries after Saturday morning's crash.

A second firefighter injured in the crash, Joseph Fischetti, remains in critical condition at Waterbury Hospital.

Keane and Fischetti were thrown from an engine truck when it collided with a ladder truck Saturday morning while responding to a kitchen fire at a home. Keane suffered head and internal injuries, and Fischetti, who was driving the engine truck, sustained internal injuries, fire officials said.

The wake for Keane is scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in City Hall Aldermanic Chambers.

His funeral will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church on East Main Street. The burial will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, also on East Main Street.

Keane is survived by his wife, Monica, a 10-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son.

Six other firefighters were injured, but they are expected to recover, authorities said.

The engine truck was heading west on East Aurora Street and the ladder truck was traveling north on Route 73 when they collided at a high rate of speed at the intersection of the two roads, officials said.

It's the second time Waterbury firefighters have mourned after a truck crash. Firefighters Howard Hughes and Heriberto Rivera were killed on May 10, 1990, after their firetruck lost its brakes and crashed into a tree on the way to a call.

Statement from Waterbury Fire Chief Michael Maglione:

"It is with deepest regret that the Waterbury Fire Department announces the passing of Capt. John Keane, 37. Captain Keane was a 13-year veteran of the Waterbury Fire Department. He was a tireless worker for Local 1339 IAFF and the East Mountain Community where he lived. He is survived by his wife Monica, daughter, Erica, 10, and son, John, 8."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and to his brothers and sisters of the department.
