Hello,
I am new to this forum. I signed up because I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with a couple questions I have. I'm not a firefighter or an EMT. I am actually a Spanish translator. I am in the process of translating a number PowerPoint presentations into Spanish for a friend of mine who will be going to Central America to train a group of firefighters in Guatemala. Though I understand both English and Spanish very well, I am not familiar with firefighting lingo. Since I don't understand some of the specific terminology of the profession, it becomes very difficult to translate concepts that I don't understand into another language. I have been able to educate myself on numerous subjects thanks to the abundance of articles on the internet. However, there are a few terms and phrases that are a little unclear to me.

My friend is currently out of the country and is not available to clarify anything for me at the moment. Thus, I was hoping that it would be alright to post a few of my questions here on this forum. I'm not sure which location would be most appropriate to make my postings, so I'd thought I'd make my first post under communications since I'm struggling with terminology. If there is a more appropriate place to make posts of this nature, please let me know!

So my first question is this:
One of the presentations contains a slide with a picture of a burning house. The title reads, "Alert fire box 14-7." What is a "fire box" and what do the numbers represent?

I'd really appreciate any help you could offer! Thank you very much in advance!

Please see my PM to you concerning this. I have sent you some information, but it would help to know what area of the country this concerns. We have firefighters from all over on here and if you name a city or department maybe I or someone from that department could give you better info.

Hi,
Thanks for the explanation! Regarding the location, I wish I could tell you for sure, but the location is not mentioned in the presentation. I can ask though, as soon as my friend returns.

Thanks again!
