I was born and raised in Philly; I had the opportunity to listen to PFD growing up, and one thing I always remembered during their initial size up, they included the dimensions even if it was a row home.

I notice that the majority of homes in Jersey are SFD. When we arrive we get a 3 sided view of the structure and repot to central our initial size up………… central Engine……arriving we have a two story SFD with smoke showing from division 2 “A” alpha……….place all hands. Now! Wouldn’t you think that it would be important to give an estimated size of the structure you are dealing with? My split level SFD is significantly different from a 1.8 million dollar SFD but yet they are both a SFD.

The reason I bring this up is because size up we find is critical to our operation, and by including the dimensions it will give our incoming units, mutual aid and central a heads up on what we are about to encounter. Since our radio communication procedure has changed, Engine this…..Chief that……and we know we need at least minimum 16 on a fire ground to accomplish the basic, what’s up with the dimensions?
