Is it true that Wilmington Fire is running on all medical calls now? Are they just first responders or EMT's?
Also, I had heard a rumor that Wilmington is doing away with their ambulances. They had a grant or something to pay for their ambulances and whoever rode the ambulance was Mon thru Friday and all overtime. Any validity to that? And are they getting rid of them and being just a first responder non-transporting fire dept? Will a private company take over the transport service?

I'll answer to the best of my knowledge:

Unless something has changed... WFD runs medical assists on "D" and "E" level EMD calls; they were not running "all" medicals. Majority, if not all, WFD personel are EMT-B certified.

The City of Wilmington has always contracted with a private ambulance contractor to provide the primary 911 EMS response within city limits. WFD has / had EMS units in service and available at varying times of the day - staffing permitted - to supplement the EMS response within the city.

As for the grant and funding issue - that is all political and I am not up on all of the details regarding the arrangement; but yes, there is or will be a change soon in the function of WFD and staffing of their EMS transport units.
