I am on the East Coast and was wondering if volunteer or auxillary firefighters are used out there when more personnel are needed?
I know most of LA County would be made up of career personnel but would volunteers work in the system?
I am part of a combination system with a career fire chief over 43 stations with career and volunteer personnel manning the stations.
Some stations are owned by the county have all career staffing and most stations in the county belong to volunteer corporations but have a mix of personnel. Apparatus is a mix of county owned and volunteer owned.
Each volunteer corporation has a volunteer chief but they are under the career chief and his staff for operations through out the county.
Volunteers have to meet physical and training requirements to be a active emergency responder plus take required retraining when it comes up.
They must also attended meetings and in station training and have the required responses to meet active status.
The Baltimore City Fire Service has auxillary firefighters since WW 2 but they can not be involved in interior firefighting and are just a extra person not a replacement on a unit.
