Let me assure you, Andrews AFB has so much potential! It has the opportunity, and the people to be a GREAT department. The only thin that it lacks is good management! To get your department to work, you must work with it. How can someone expect their people to perform if you are working to back stab them?????

Andrews over the many years have went through many fire chiefs, I have seen all of them since 1956, some were fair , some were good , some were very good, some were the best. The ones who were the best either died in because of old age, they spent their time and retired as they should. some could not handle the pressure from top side because of 1. no support from the command 2. no money to operate , 3. lack of allowing the firefighters to perform or do their job. 4. the grade being only a GS-12 and at one time a GS-11, The past fire chief in the two years , had the most support that I have ever seen, we have come a long ways in getting money, training, and equipment. We still lack a few things but in hopes that the NEW IN COMING FIRE CHIEF , will bring that with him. Not to say that the past did not have it, we will see.
Its to bad that AF had drage there feet on approving the GS-13 for over a year. Of which it was disapproved at local leval and at HQ AF , and at Hq AMC, when they found out the past chief got an offer to another base , the local leval decided to approve the GS-13, you sooze you lose. So what does that do now , yes the new Chief will be a GS-13 , but no one will be able to entertain the position inhouse, the Asst Chief of operations which is a GS 10 WILL get his GS-11, The Asst Chief of Tect. Services most likey may get a GS -11 as well. So all is not that bad. This will be considerd as an in house up grade under the GS-081 standards. As far as the Chief of Haz-Mat, who is a GS-10 I dont see any changes. Andrews has well trained F/Fs at all levels, some of those need fire ground experance , this will not happen at andrews, because of our low fire lost. We would like to get this experance out in the county but this needs to be worked out, our trucks look new , but we have a lot of down time.
OK people we consider our selves the best and will stand with the best , as we say if you sooz andrews will always be in front , just give us a chance
have a nice day , we need to work and protect our jobs,
:) :) :)
the problem at andrews is without a doubt, lack of experience! everybody is trained well, and has all kinds of certs, but has no idea how to apply that information on the fire ground. there are a lot that volunteer somewhere to get the experience, but these are the guys who are not in charge. as for the military firefighters, most are new to the fire service with absolutely no experience at all, and all the ones that know what they are doing are the ones who get out and get jobs somewhere, all the ones that are wworthless re-enlist and make careers out of it. then they end up in charge of something they shouldn`t be in charge of. look at the new deputy, he has been fired from every position. now he got fired all the way up the chain to the deputy spot. we will have to see what the new chief is like.

brotherhood? what brotherhood???

Extrik8, many of the firefighters at Andrews are active duty military. Most have absolutly no experience to the fire service, and are tossed into a job upon entering the military. They dont have the knowledge nor the experience from an active department. Yeah Andrews gets runs, but how can you go for four years, and run basically nothing but Automatic Fire Alarms. Most of the military firefighters therefore begin to believe that every department in the world must be like that. It is so hard to have a brotherhood when you have morons in management who tell these poor people that every fire department runs like Andrews......

Ok guys there are many departments within the andrews fire department.
1. A SHIFT, 2. B SHIFT, 3. STATION 1,
4. STATION 2, AND THAN WE HAVE #. 5. ASST.
CHIEF ON A SHIFT, 6. ASST CHIEF ON B SHIFT.
7. THE STATION CHIEF ON A SHIFT, 8. STATION
CHIEF ON B SHIFT, LAST BUT NOT LEAST
#9. AND THAT IS THE FIRE FIGHTER
YES WE ARE ONE DEPARTMENT
I KNOW THIS SOUND CRAZY BUT THAT'S WHERE WE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM, MANY FIREFIGHTERS HAVE EXPERANCE FROM THE BOOKS, MANY HAVE EXPERANCE FROM THE FIRE GROUND, AND SOME HAVE TALK EXPERANCE.
THE MILITARY ARE ALWAYS ON THE SHORT END , THEY COME FROM TECT SCHOOL WITH THE HIGHT SPIRITS OF BEING A GOOD FIRE FIGHTER , AND IN A SHORT TIME THEY START TO LOSE THESE SPIRITS OVER TIME.
THE AF HAS A LOW FIRE LOSS , AND THATS THE NAME OF THE GAME AS FAR AS THE AF IS CONCERN. FIRE PREVENTION IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. ON THE OTHER HAND THE CIVILIANS WHO HAVE BEEN AROUND AND HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE VOLINTEES DEPARTMENTS UNDER STAND, THE BOOK IS ONLY PART OF THE FIRE SERVICE. DOD FIRE DEPARTMENTS BEING IN A CONTOLED AREA WILL ALWAYS HAVE A LOW FIRE LOSS BECAUSE OF THIS. THATS WHY IT'S A PAPER DEPARTMENT. FILES AND RECORDS SHOW TRAINING, INSPECTIONS, AND LOW DOLLAR LOSS. THIS IS WHY THE MILITARY GET VERY LITTLE FIRE GROUND EXPERANCE. WHEN AND IF THERE IS A LARGE FIRE , ALL THE BOOK LEARNERS WANT TO SHOW WHAT THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY CAN DO.
AS WE ALL KNOW THE FIRE GROUND IS THE TEST ON YOUR ABILTY TO PERFORM , THATS REALITY OF THE FIRE SERVICE. IT DON'T COME FROM A BOOK.
WE CAN PRATICE EVERY DAY , BUT WHEN THE REAL THING COMES ALONG , THAT IS THE FINAL TEST.
THE CIVILIANS WHO BELONG TO THE VOLINTEERS HAS A WEALTH OF EXPERANCE , AS WELL AS A FEW MILITARY WHO BELONG AS WELL. THIS IS WHERE WE NEED TO SHARE THIS EXPERANCE. BEING PROMOTED TO DIFFERENT LEVELS TO FAST SOME TIME DOES NOT HELP NOT ONLY THE PERSON BUT AS WELL THE DEPARTMENT.
ITS LIKE A APPLE . IN THE BEGINING START OUT AS A BUD , AND IT GROWS TO BE RIPE. IF SOME ONE PICKS YOU OFF THE TREE TO EARLY , WELL YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT WILL HAPPEN.
SO I SAY WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER AND IN HOPES THAT NO ONE WILL GET HURT AND EVERYONE WILL GET WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. ITS NOT WHAT YOU DO FOR YOUR SELF ITS WHAT YOU DO FOR OTHERS THAT COUNTS. HELP THOSE WHO NEED HELP SO WE CAN BE LOOK AT AS THE BEST IN THE AIR FORCE . :) :) :) :) :)

So what is the latest down there. Has the cert list come back for the chiefs position and who will be making the selection.
the chiefs position has to be re-posted due to it being a 13 now. no lists yet. it really doesn`t matter though. 2 years is about max for a chief here. the union chews them up!
rsqsqd, speaking of shoulder, did you see who is a hero in the new firehouse magazine? P.G. volunteer with 40 is a $150 heroism award winner.

Everyone or a few did not like the past chief, now they are seeing what a Military Chief is like, it seems like he does what he wants, he states he will look in to it but no changes, didn't expect any changes from a military chief any way, Andrews has had military chiefs before, none have ever like civilians. In the end they will be glade this military chief will be gone, some one said July, Andrews with another chief, # 100, they will most likely pick a Ret. Military Chief any way. When will management ever learn.
