I've heard of companies going out and purchasing an old scope sitting is some field some where, then having the aerial paert 100% refurbed and mounted on a new seagrave chassis. Anyone else heard of this? If so, where the hell is this magical "field"?

There are several things you have to know to start.

1. Pay close attention and keep up with the FDNY purchases. When they get new towers they are cycling older ones out.

2. Look on the NYC Gov't site about surplus equipment auctions and make some phone calls.

3. You can find them in the used fire apparatus dealer magazines.

4. Frequently visit websites of Dept's who currently have an Aerialscopes to see if they post anything about new purchases.

5. PA Fireman magazine often has at least 1 or 2 every month.

6. Look in the Truck Trader magazine sometimes you get lucky and see one in there.

Several Dept's have rebuilt/re-chassis units...

Birdsboro Fire Company-PA

Bowie Fire Department-MD (they have 2, 1 rebuild and 1 re-chassis)

Kentland Fire Department-MD (original unit was a re-chassis and then rebuilt after a roll over)

Boise Fire Department-Idaho (Not sure if they still have it)

Oakmont Fire Department-PA (Near Pittsburgh-Unit complete Rehab by Interstate Truck in Hagerstown, MD

Of course it all comes down to Money, how much are you willing to spend and how much do you have to spend...check them out for yourself

If there was a magical field of 'Scopes out there, I'm sure there would be a line of people like me and you waiting to buy them. But alas, the closest thing you'd find to that would be the FDNY auctions when they have 'em. But keep in mind, finding 95' Scopes is hard to do, as there are much more 75' models in service.

Hershey, PA also recently got their Aerialscope re-mounted on a Pierce chassis. Here are some photos: http://firewagonphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/4295403#251735702.

Enjoy!

KME in PA has two sitting on their trade in lot. I believe one is a 95', both are out of NY companies (not FDNY). One problem you may run into with buying/refurbing an old Scope, is the parts to fix them are becoming harder to find. One of my customers has the old FDNY Tonka Toy (Dillsburg Fire, in PA), and they are replacing it with a straight stick. They had it refurbed a few years after they bought it, but anymore getting parts for it has become a problem.
