Well, what’s going on you ask? Let me see if I can get this right with as few opinions as possible. I guess if I keep it factual, type it on my home computer, and post it from home there is not much to be said.
The two Assistant Chief positions were filled the other day. After a grueling (so I was told) interview process, two Firefighter / Paramedics were selected over six eligible Captains. The decision was a shock to some and not to others. I personally was surprised. (Here I go with the opinion part, quit reading now if you want, you have been warned!!) I was surprised that ALL the captains were passed over. I guess it sends them a message? Maybe one of them would enlighten us on what they think that message is; I got my ideas. We all know that just because you are certified, you are not always qualified. It’s also nice to see that years of service do not matter. Maybe the best choices were made…time will tell.

Back to some facts.. Before you start with the name calling and saying I must be one of the disgruntled, you should know that I had no stake in it at all. I was not eligible for the A/C positions, and will not be here long enough to worry about any CPT slots that may have been created, had Captains been promoted. Not that it matters now, as there is NO upward mobility in the department in the foreseeable future. I am on to other scenes, yup if you didn’t know it, you do now. I hear that DOD is still paying their people correctly and that they follow USC 5… I will leave it at that. :eek:

I don’t think it is that you can’t count; maybe it’s because that magic number is not set in stone for you to count up to. It seems to me that when you have a set standard to follow, it is easier to get there. When the number changes per shift I guess it is hard to tell…
Or maybe I am way off and you are talking about something else. I don’t think it’s the white helmets that kill brain cells though. I think it is directly correlated to the number of bugles on your collar.

Fireman, I couldn’t agree with this more! Unfortunately you have to spend a little time in the trenches before you can claim to come from there. When you use your peers as steps to the top, it makes for a lonely perch.

How the hell can you go from firefighter to Assistant chief. what grade are captains and what is the grade of an A/C. I saw the firefighter/paramedic what is that grade.

DOD maybe a bit dicked up but it sure as hell aint as fucked up as FEMA (FIXING EVERYTHING MY ASS).

SO, it has been brought to my attention that some of you out there in cyber-space should not be on The Watch Desk. It seems that in your spare time you are psychics, and know what I am thinking, so you should not have to read the posts here. Let me clear it up for you. In my post above I stated that DOD was paying their people correctly and following USC 5. I doubt that some of you even know what the hell USC 5 is, and that’s sad. The part I was referring to in USC 5 specifically was Title 5, Part III, Subpart D, Chapter 55, Subchapter V, § 5545b. I am not going to tell you what that is, you can either use your clairvoyant powers and guess, or use the spare time you have surfing the net at work to go find out what it is for sure. Maybe if the whole firefighting gig doesn’t work out for you, you can call Ms. Cleo and the Psychic Friends Network and get a job there. In the future, if you are unclear on something I said or require more explanation, feel free to contact me I will clear it up for you.
In other news…
The NPFFA would like to announce the formation of a new chapter… it will be the NPLFFA (or NPCA). Contact your local NPFFA representative for more information.
There will be a St. Patty’s Day Bash at Bushwaller’s in Frederick, MD on 17 March 2008. I will be there early to get a table. If you are going let me know so I can save seats, it gets crowded. Bushwaller’s is located at 209 N. Market St. downtown. Parking is available at the parking deck across from the courthouse.

No Brother 1, you got it all wrong. You see a while back, long before all this promotion stuff ever came about, a few of us founded the first chapter of the NPFFA….Non-Promotable Firefighters’ Association. We all figured it might be the next FOOLS or something. As it turns out it is just a good excuse to get together and have a few cold ones… In lieu of recent events we decided to expand our organization. There was no vote yet on the official name of the new chapter, but the two options on the table are; NPLFFA- Non-Promotable Lead Firefighters’ Association or NPCA – Non-Promotable Captains’ Association. I think we will vote later this week, so stay tuned.
I was unaware that New Zealand had a possum (opossum) problem, is it bad there?? Those little buggers can be nasty. A buddy of mine at Ft. Knox can vouch to that. Yes, USC5 is vast and not written for you or me to understand. I had a lawyer explain it to me.

:confused: I don't have the privelege of working in the fine Mt Weather fire establishment but have heard several stories. I have to sit back and wonder how much negative vibes you firefighters, captains can get from your chief. as i have heard from several big guys in my dept. that the new AC positions were picked because of college education. hmmmmm..... Since when does the AC have to have a degree? I understand the new DC does not. Is that considered a double standard... guess years of service doesn't count anymore. Time to school it up. Will the Fed. Gov't pay for all of you to go back to school so you can get promoted?
