8-Alarm Travis AFB Fire Destroys 125 Vacant Homes
FAIRFIELD (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― An eight-alarm fire is burning on Travis Air Force Base that has destroyed at least 125 vacant homes that are scheduled for demolition.
Fairfield Fire Marshall Morgana Yahnke says no occupied homes are in the fire's path and that no evacuations have been ordered.
The flames ignited off base but reportedly jumped onto Travis Air
Force Base property.
The blaze was reported as a grass fire at about 3:15 p.m. at 600 Parker Road, a Fairfield fire dispatcher said. It quickly spread to the base thanks to warm and windy weather conditions.
No injuries have been reported and the cause remains under investigation.
Air base officials ordered residents on the base to stay indoors with windows closed in order to protect themselves from the smoke.
"Our highly-trained and well-equipped emergency personnel are working with our local partners to contain the fire and limit the damage," said Air Force Col. Mark Dillon, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, in a statement.
Travis Air Force Base is located about 38 miles southwest of Sacramento.
