Hi guys,

Looking for information on the old Salvage Wagon. I was listening to old audio from the Air Florida crash, and then I think a metro tunnel alarm went out where the Salvage Wagon was dispatched. I know a lot of cities had salvage corps, fire patrols, and other similar companies. I'd like to know more about DCFD's version.

Thanks!

The Salvage and Compressed Air Truck (SCAT) was a piece of apparatus assigned to Engine Co. No. 24. Here is a quote from the old Training Procedure: "A van-type utility truck that carries 52 - 30 minute cylinders, 10 - 1 hour (4.5) air cylinders, 1 - Peri-Jet, 2 - Kenco Pumps, 1 - Homelite Pump, 1 - Bosch Breaker Hammer, and a large assortment of buckets, mops, brooms, salvage covers and various other salvage equipment."

Dog,

was there only one SCAT unit? How long was it in service for?

I thnik there was only one Salvage and Compressed Air Truck in service at any time. The designation was changed to Salvage Unit when the first Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) list of standardized terminology for fire apparatus was developed (early 80's, maybe). The unit was moved from E24 to E9, where it was stationed for at least a few years, and I think it was moved to new E4 when it opened in 1976 (if it was not, at least the towed air compressor and Bosch Air Hammer were). It was staffed by one firefighter. It was eventually phased out when the Mask Support Unit (later the Air Unit and Metro Support Unit) was placed in service, and various Mass Casualty Units (unstaffed) carried the stretchers and blankets that the SCAT had been stocked with.

I don't have a picture, but my feeble memory seems to recall that the unit was a '68 or '69 Chevy (or Ford) chassis with a gas engine and three speed manual transmission. It was about the size of a current DC ambulance, but, unlike some later 'special' units in the city, it was not a converted ambulance.

John and all . It was on a Ford Chassis and was speced by us.THe body on it was smaller than at Rescue Squad Body but way bigger than an ambulance. I know where the original drawings are and I am looking for a picture of it in my BASEMENT.

If the Light Wagon had been in the 3rd Battalion, Timmy would have found a way to staff it on day work.

Thank You , Thank you very much. It sure is nice to see Piggy posting again.
As for the Light Wagon. The Jeep was at the Drill School along with all the other stuff that was being gotten rid of at the time about 1996 or so. Anyway a certain individual came to School and told a ceertain Driving Sgt. ( who is now a Lt) that he won the bid on it. The Sgt said ok, asked for no paperwork and away it went. Well the person that did win the bid showed up latter. Well that's the way I heard the story and the Light Wagon was never recovered. Well that's it for now. Back to the Basement Im purgging:eek: The Garage is next:o

Hi Cosgrove!

Stinebaugh,

Thanks! How many folks staffed it?

The first salvage wagon that I knew of was in the sixties. It was an old (1948?) pumper that in addition to the salvage gear carried an air cascade.

It was staffed by one firefighter. That person mainly served as station security when the other units in the house were out, and an additional body to help with watch detail. If I remember the old annual reports, the SCAT never broke into triple digits in a year.
