Hard to believe u outlived the horse's!!!

I know damn well that they drank a whole lot less, then someone else I know did!!

Also you are an old dawg, unlike a youngin like me

Loo,

True the horses did drink less. The someone you know finally pickeled himself and no longer needs any adult beverages. As for outlasting the horses I am on the Tremel Plan. If he can do so can I..
As for being an OLD DAWG remember Your only as old as you feel. Some days I feels real old and some days I don't. Go Figure

Jake

I am searching through my archives for that picture of the horse drawn tank wagon. As soon as I finid it I will post it.

On a final note. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy and Safe New Years.

I notice that 135' E-One Stick in that pic of the WLF. That would indicate that picture being from the late 80's. Was that WLF currently in Service at the time? Was it running as the Pumper of that particular Engine company? It looks like it is in good shape.

The Ward La France Pumper shown was in service as Engine Company 3's pumper. It was struck broadside at the intersection of ( I believe) Independance Ave and 7'th St. where it fell apart due to the rust. If you look at the picture closley you will notice it has a plywood roof built by the Fire Dept. Repair Shop to protect the driver. This was done after the riots. As for the Rough Rider Regs 1 answered that question. AS for the Twinned Agent Unit I think it just went to the scrap yard.:D

The pic of the 135: That was a 1983 E-One 135 built on a Spartan Chassis the third unit built in the country and the frist placed in service east of the Mississippi. It was assigned to Truck 1 in 1983 and stayed in service till May 1995 when Truck was placed out of service for budget reasons. It was reassigned to Truck 4 in May of 1995 and was involved in an accident with Truck 3 in route to a structure fire. I am not sure of the exact date of the accident. The vehicle was scraped after the accident and striped for parts.

Tim 12, I believe that Engine 121 was from Braddock Heights Volunteer Fire Company up in Frederick County, Maryland. When I rode by there I just saw that the gate was open and decided to go walk in and snap a few shots. I didn't ask for permission to go in, but knowbody said to me that I couldn't come in.

The 135 assigned to t-10 was the second 135 purchased by the city. The original one was totaled by the crew of trucks 4 and 3. I do have the original photo taken by firehouse mag in front of the capital before it went in service. I will try to dig this up.

The second piece purchased by the city was on a shorter wheel base and had a terrible push in the corners. It also ran quicker but not faster. It was assigned to truck 3 and has been rehabed I did see it down at the school when it returned but had a lot of issues that had to be redone.

Why/when did DCFD switch from the mostly white color scheme to the white over red design? I always thought the old style gave DCFD a unique look...

Loo for life
04-01-2004, 10:08 AM
We had the traditional color scheme until the late eighties when it was decided that tradition was bad and that the DC Flag design on apparatus would be better looking. Late nineties brought us back to the tried and true white over red look.

I know its not about the DCFD, but there are 2 other 135's out there, both ex-Fairfax Co trucks. Old Truck 10 a 1984 Hurricane E-1 135 was sold and is now at John Ender VFD in Barryville Va and a matching truck was sold to E-1 and is still sitting at American Fire in Woodbridge. So there are more than just 3 135's left out there.....

I believe the first pic is T-1 I put that inservice when it was new.

Regs1 I think you are mistaken.. If that Seagrave was at 5 Truck it is the only Truck that never had a Roof or Tiller Cage put on it. This Truck has a Roof on it. Might have been T-4 or T-1 before T-1 was wrecked in 78..

The third picture of the WLF .. If it is E-3's pumper before a certain BFC who will remain namless at FPD wrecked it. I have the Chrome Grill in my Garage.

Thats it for my recolections.. If I can ever figure out how to get my slide scanner to work I got some classics in the Archives :)

The truck in the picture is probably T-1, but need to ask Lt. Fisher to confirm since he tillered it way back then.

I believe most of the old trucks had wooden cab roofs due to riots, and other events that occured back then. Most of the old Pirch pumpers has the same type of roof for the same reason.

The history lesson came from Capt Dave Parker who was once assigned to T-4 and retired from T-5.

The old truck T-5 had an open cab, and tiller assembly. Made driving it in the rain and snow a new meaning. :)

According to Matt Lee's book on Seagraves. The DCFD is the last Tower that Seagrave BUILT. However in 1928 Seagrave re-built a Hale Water Tower for FDNY and again reworked it in 1938.

There is nothing in Matt's book that mentions a Seagrave Tower to LA in 1938..

Henry Addison was the Mayor of Georgetown before and during the civil war. My guess it would've belonged to Georgetown Company 1 and was a piece of their steamer. It's confusing though because of the number 15 and the "DCFD" markings. The name of the steamer may have been retained after the Georgetown and Washington City departments merged in 1871. Is it an identifying device used in the same way we use decals and patches on our apparatus today?

Well, we know that the Henry Addison was a steam engine built at the Amoskeag Works in Manchester, New Hampshire for the Georgetown Fire Company in 1867 when it turned into a part paid company. It was used at the Vigilant Fire House for the Georgetown Fire Company No. 1 when it was still under control by the town of Georgetown. This is the building we still see on Wisconsin Ave. It was known as Co. No. 1 until 1871 when it was merged with the new District of Columbia Fire Department to then be recognized as DCFD Engine Company 5. Now i'm only guessing here, but would the "15" have anything to do with the fact that it was Co. 1 and then renamed Co. 5? Statement being made under the assumption that firemen have always been very traditional and I didn't know if they were trying to hold onto this piece of history or not. As for what the device is used for...I honestly don't know, but my guess would be that it was a sort of headlight or marker light of sorts.

Bunkroom Bandit pretty much hit it ritht on the head with his info about the Vigilant Fire Company. Fast Forward to 1895 When Engine Comnpany 15 was formed in Anacostia. Eng Co 15 was given the Henry Addison Steamer to go in service with. I believe that the Members of Eng Co 15 had the 15 engraved in the center of the glass lens. The answer Bunkroom Bandit is that the picture is of one of the lamps that were on the Henry Addison.
Hope everyone enjoyed this little bit of history.

I believe J Smith posted the individual photo a while back, but I ran across it in a magazine today. The page is a scan from a publication titled Volunteer Firemen, dated May 1937. It looks to have been put out by the NFPA, from Boston, Massachusetts. The magazine's cover photo shows a March 18, 1937 schoolhouse explosion that killed 294 in London, Texas.

I had to shrink down, so it lost quite a bit of the quality.

I am pretty sure that T-1 had two chrome bars, but I will check with the last known tillerman still left on the job this sunday, but T-5 in picture had three full bars in front, this truck was T-4 and became hand me down to T-5 after T-4 turned it over and was repaired by the shop.

Question: How many Seagrave trucks of this type did DCFD have?

I emailed the Almighty about the truck issue- of course he referred it to a higher authority (John Breen), but here is the reply:

Hi, just got home. The three large bars were on Truck 4 after the wreck they
had. I think they hit a bus, but can't remember for sure. Breen would know.
Truck 1 after its wreck was rebuilt with a newer front end, duel (4) head
lights instead of the original singles (2). Hope that answers your question,
don't know too much more than that.

Jim

PS, I wonder where the thread is going regarding these 2 trucks-- as many of you know the Capitol Fire Museum owns both of them- we do have plans for them but things are somewhat in a holding pattern right now.

Thread – just FD pictures and trivia – The department actually owned three seagraves of this type, originally 1- T-1, 2- T-4 later T-5 and the third went to T-13, which I believe is in the picture.

Still trying to find info about the three bars on T-4/5, had two complete different versions of a story of the three chrome bars, however T-1 and T-13 looked like the seagrave in the picture.

Rich - if you have access to old T-5 check the mounting holes below the top bar, if a replacement bar, the original mounting holes should still be there.

How will this unit play with the two air and light units DCFD has now?

This will be the new Air 1 and the current Air 1 will go into reserve fleet and current Air 2 will stay as it is.....

Man, I like that National Capital Metro area Homeland decal (see Arlington FD is good for something) wooo hooo and yes I am easily amused

Just remember it was Arlington FD, DCFD STOLE stuff from on 09/11. A national emergency and some of DC's bravest revert to common street thieves. I note DCFD had to apologize and give the stuff back. Not DCFD's finest hour.

Oh, and just why did they not agree to play well with the incident command system set up that day???

Now DCFD has a bunch of great guys (but a certain LT at 3 leaves much to be desired) but I would lay off the Arlington guys.

Antozilla: Perhaps you could enlighten those of us unfamiliar with the situation in your last post?

Antozilla, What exactly did DCFD steal youngin, do you even know what you are talking about and just say thanks for those fine men who did put your fire out despite the best efforts of the all ACFD Vest Commanders fuck that ICS of the day shit.

Our members worked under an ICS but our Incident Commanders were a little more shall we say Pro Active or aggressive ;) on that day than your Incident Commanders, anyway next time just take a compliment and say thank you.

Feel free to comment cause I know this will get your panties in a bunch! :D
