Never been much on E-One's, never had the pleasure of ridin one but from what I've heard they aren't much. And with the Skylift on it, it just one or two or several more things to go wrong.

Beltsville Tower 31 in PG County, MD is a Bronto, but in looking at it now, it looks like it's a Pierce...Been there three times in the course of a year to shoot it, and it's been out all three times...*shrug*

Bronto's been in business a lot longer than E-One. Never saw a published report of a major problem. Lot's of E-One's in the area...no major problems.

There are several E-One's near where I live. I haven't heard any complaints from those departments with them, although personally i favor ALF :D

When I started in 1993, my first engine was a brand new E-One. We never had any problems with her, except stuff we did.( tried to back in the bay with a deck gun up, hit something with an open door) Then the customer service we got from the dealer was crap, but the overall product I can't complain about.

The E-1’s that DCFD had did not hold up under the constant pounding. District of Columbia had quality control items, pump problems, engine problems, the interior of the apparatus basically looked cheap, and did not last. Most E-1's lasted about 4 to 5 years before replacement. Most did not make it to reserve status, but the junk yard status.
DCFD currently has been buying seagraves, they seem to take the pounding better, most still in good condition after 3 years.

just an opinion of things observed

How are the Pierces holding up? How do they measure up to the Seagraves?

What part are you referring to, the E-One chassis or the Bronto Skylift? I'm not much of an E-One fan, but the Bronto is hard to beat.

Five Brontos were mounted on Pierce chassis (3 on Long Island; Beltsville, MD; and South Padre Island, TX) before E-One became the US supplier for Bronto. I've had the pleasure of riding the basket of the tallest Bronto in the country (the 174' model in South Padre Island, TX), and for stability and wind resistance, it can't be beat. Without question, I felt more comfortable in that than either the 95' E-One tower or 100' Pierce tower that I've been assigned to in the past.

Why do YOU think it's junk, Clagle?

Currently going to school in Oklahoma -- and the Tulsa FD has one. Went up there to talk to the guys and take a look at it. One word -- BIG.

But it takes way too long to set it up... I want to say that it took them almost 8 minutes to go from setting the parking brake to getting the boom in the air.

Been riding in several for about 5 years, cheap interior, need to slam doors, carry a screwdriver to tighten up loose screws every so often but otherwise fine. Was involved in a roll over accident with one and it held up with no problems..all alive! they get my vote unless you can bring back Hahn's.

Pierces holding up ok - some early electrical problems, corrected under warrenty work, understand they were under bid by seagrave on the GSA schedule last go around - other than that I find the right seat area a little small with all the equipment.
overall they seem to be holding up, but were replaced by seagraves, most are now in reserve status, this is due to age not equipment failure.

Wehave two E One CII pumpers. They have had small problems with wireing and they stood by their warrenty. They painted our whole tanker and installed a new suspension. We will return to them because of the great way our dealership has been to us.

Having to get a rig repainted and a complete new suspension installed would be enough to scare must customers away from a manufacturer. The dealer MUST be great!

If you are refering to me i'm not jealous I would not want an E-One everything in my station sports the Pierce nameplate. Like I said E-One is a cheap knock off of a Pierce hell E-One could not even come up with their own nameplate to put on their equipment. They stole the Pierce oval and put their name in it!

WITHIN THE LAST YEAR MY COMPANY BOUGHT A E-ONE 75' QUINT. WE WERE ALL ABOUT GETTING A SEAGRAVE MEANSTICK UNTIL THIS E-ONE CAME INTO PLAY, AND SINCE IT WAS A FAIRLY USED DEMO, FOR SOME ODD REASON, WE JUMPED ON THAT. WE HAVE HAD IT IN SERVICE SINCE MARCH, AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEM'S SINCE. IT HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE LONGER THEN IT HAS BEEN IN SERVICE.

THIS JUST GO'S TO SHOW, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. . . .AND WHEN YOU BUY E-ONE, YOUR WASTING YOUR MONEY

JUNK! That's all that can be said when it comes to E-ONE! My company bought an E-ONE last Nov. and has been nothing but a bag full of problems. Don't get me wrong it's a nice looking piece, but 2 months after we got it the door handle broke on the inside, the relief valve got stuck in the on position, electrical problems out the ying-yang, would constantly be found dead in the morning during the daily check out. Thank god it's not our first due piece.

Had the displeasure of being with a dept. that owned 6 E-Nones. Poor performace, durability and service from dealer. Had two re-furb'd after accidents, both had numerous problems afterwards and were sold after a year of repeat trips to the local service center {mech., elect. & paint}. All E-none's {'86-'92} have been replaced with Pierce's. Enuff said.

E-One sells a lot of fire trucks. I have never really cared for them, but I have seen some units do well and last a log time - and others come from the factory ready for the junk yard. That can be said for any manufacturer from time to time but I hear it more about E-One. Their selling point is "location, location, location". If they didn't have a home base in Flordia and encourage inspection trips to the factory, they would have gone out of business years ago.

I once heard a statement to the effect of "If you could build fire engines in Hawaii, you would lead the industry." (paraphrase). I think that is very true. Anybody up for establishing a fire aparatus manufacturer in Las Vegas?

E-Ones and ALF's are junk. I don't think my department's would buy them.
I think they are built cheap.
I have had the chance to ride in both. We had to slam the doors on the E-One and you needed ear plugs on the ALF's

I love Pierce, but I would also buy Seagrave, or Sutphen I think they build great trucks that hold up alot better then E-Ones and the ALF's.

I just love a good arguemant on who makes the best rig. Just like what color should a firetruck be RED ofcourse but its my opinion.

Having an engine roll over in your dept is something i wish no one to go thru, however ours was a peirce and if you could see how well the cab held up, you been sold on peirce like we have.
My dept is full compliant peirce now with 2 , 2002 engines to go along a 2000 eng tanker, 1994 heavy rescue and a 1978 tower rehabbed in 88 acquired in 97 by my dept.

I will not say we havent had our problems with any of our peirces, but the local rep is very responsive and our minimal problems were taken care of without delay. Some problems we have had, some paint issues on our rescue, and some minor cosmetics, but by no means did it compromise the use of the truck.

Actually, Pierce built six rigs with Bronto Skylifts. The ones you mentioned and one more for the Cincinnati Airport. The three Long Island rigs went to Bohemia, Wading River, and Southampton.

Our E-One would make an excellent boat anchor. We've put about 20k in transmission repairs in the last year. Granted, it is the 1st generation of Allison's World, and it's mated to an early generation Cummins M11, but we've had nothing but problems with it. The E-One cab and body are fine. Biggest problem is the air conditioner drips on whoever is in the back. The steering leaves something to be desired... takes 10 acres to turn around. They had to move something in the steering to accomadate the engine. Sounds like they forgot to plan for that. Hope they've learned since that truck in 96. All the rest of our apparatus is Pierce.

Our 2 front line engine/tankers are a Luverne and a Central States, both on a Freightliner FL-80 chassis. We love them. When we bought both trucks, we bid out on Pierce, KME, and 4-guys. The biggest issue was price. All the other trucks we looked at were nice too, not knocking any of them.

You can buy any piece of Fire Apparatus and make it last, it all depends on how you take care and maintain them. Here's a E-One pumper thats 14 years old and it still runs as well as it did in 1990.

My company has an E-One Bronto Skylift and the thing is a piece of crap. It's in and out of the shop all the time. We had to run an air hose to it and place and adapter on it for the hose so it doesn't lose air pressure while it's not in use. It's only 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old. It has already had work done to the rear. One of the things that cracks me up is that E-one was bragging to us about it being 118'. We should be able to reach almost anything. Well, one thing is, the damn thing is so big we can't always set it up where we would need it. And it won't reach everything that we would need it to. You can barely fit 2 people in the bucket when it is in the cradle. The person not operating the bucket has to be on hands and knees till the thing gets up in the air. Example: We were set up at a working fire in a neighboring jurisdiction. We were placed behind another piece of apparatus. We were 2nd truck on scene. We couldn't even reach the roof. If we would have had a straight tower, there wouldn't even have been a question. But with this piece of crap, it's always a guessing game. In my opinion, if you're spending $950,000 on a game, it better be an easy one and one that you can win every time.

I hadn't heard that about Seagrave. The story (more like rumor) I heard was that it was more like FDNY throwing Ferrara a bone for their 9/11 donations. Don't know for sure, but that's what I heard.

We have 1 Eone 85' straight stick made in 1985. It is the best vehicle we have. We have 2 Eone 50' squirts a '95 and a '91. We have one pierce engine '02, one peirce 95' midmount '03 and a eone rescue '91 The truck we have had the least problems with is the old ladder. The engines are nothing but problems. Constant wiring problems. Both have already been out for paint and they are both ready to go again.

They could get rid of all of them and leave me the straight stick i'd be plenty happy

Everyone forgets thatma truck is the sum of it's parts. It's how you spec things out that makes a diifference. You spec sheap, you get cheap!

The biggest problems are the Chiefs who go "oooh " and "ahhhh" when they see the latest and greatewst rig from any manufacturer, but forget one teeny tiny little thing...their firefighters who will actually be operating the rigs!

Just my 3 cents worth.. Captains have to pay a little more!

Cumberland has 3 Sutphen Engines and 1 Pierce and a Used up Seagrave from Montgomery County. Essentially all are Junk in their own way. One is shot from having too much use and no Maintaince. The newest has so much electronic shit on it never acts the same way twice. All manufactures are capable of building a High quality piece and like cars they are the sum of their parts; Engine problems - Blame Cummings, Detroit, or Cat. Transmission problems - Blame Allison, Pump problems - Blame Hale, Darley. Or Watrous, Lighting problems - blame Whelen or Federal, Some cabs are built by some one else (freightliner, International, Spartan) so even with the best assembly play the numbers and things are bound to fail. Sometimes manufactures buy in batches from manufactures that is why all 20 engines company X purchased had bad engines - Because they are from the same batch not because E-one or Pierce sucks.

I'll preface this by saying that we are a vollie department that has maybe 20 "significant" structure fires in a year, if that, and spend much more time training than in real fire use.

That being said, we have a 1993 E-one on a Freightliner FL80 Crew Cab pumper, and a 1994 E-One pumper tanker on a two door FL80, and strangers coming into the station think they are only a couple years old. They have held up well for us. Only one thing with them is really an E-One design issue, (and that is due to what we spec'd) those $*#$#& inverters. On the pumper tanker, we put a small gas generator in a compartment, it went right into a provided pigtail. On the pumper, we will put the gas generator from the old rescue into it when the new rescue comes in. If we had spec'd a real honest to goodness generator instead of an inverter, it wouldn't be a problem.

The other problems? door latches on the Freightliner cabs and pump seals on the Hale pumps. Neither one E-One problems. Our dealer has always been great about service, the box is great, everything always works

Eone's leveling system on its mid-mount aerials is outstanding. No one, even pierce could make a leveling system like Eone's. As far as the quality of the Eone's products its like any other piece of appartus. You get good and bad appartus. Their will always be something that goes wrong with the apparatus. We have 4 eone's in service. The biggest problem we had was a bad D-deck chip that failed. It did not stop the performance of the apparatus when you needed to pump. Another problem was air conditioner unit fan broke, Well after 7 years of beating it year after year, its nothing to cry about. Its expected.
Just remember alot of these parts come from other companys that are placed on the Eone apparatus. So when you complain about things failing on the apparatus make sure its not a part made by another company than Eone.
As far a electrical problems did not hear of many problems with this. KME yes they are very bad with their electrical system. But KME makes nice DESIGNED apparatus with a good price.
I don't really care what our department buys because its not coming out of my paycheck! And I don't have to fix it when it breaks!
PS: stay away from DEMO and refrubed apparatus nothing but trouble, What do expect when its being beat and tested to it limits before you recieve it.
