Sure, what would you like to talk about? I'm a Structure Specialist for MD-TF 1 (you know, one of those strange civilian types! lol).

Nope, I didn't make the Mobex drill. They scheduled it the week we were in North Carolina for vacation. Oh well, I would like to think that a shift at Golden Eagle will count for something.

Could be. It all hinges on the work and family schedule, though.

Don - You have any news links or photos of either of these incidents?

Chris - Sorry I didn't have a chance to track you down for the Firehouse Expo, was only there for a couple of days this year. Did get to go out with some PA and Massachusetts guys. It was an education to say the least. I will owe you one next year.

Thanks for the info, Don. We had a roof collapse from heavy rain on an auto body shop a couple of weeks ago. No entrapments, though. They were demolishing an old building at the Sparrows Point steel mill this morning when gravity unexpectedly finished the job for them. Details are still sketchy, but I'm only hearing about one minor injury and no entrapment.

Tom, sorry I missed you at the Expo. Sounds like you had a good time. You didn't happen to go to the FOOLS party by any chance, did you?

how can someone join a FEMA USAR and/or how can I get one started in KY?

You can join a FEMA USAR team by doing what I did (leaving your current FD for another departmant that has a taskforce). You can't start one (from what I've been told, there are no plans to add any more teams). Look here to see where the teams near you are: http://www.fema.gov/usr/usrtask.shtm

Sometimes, certain teams will allow people from a fair distance away who have desired training (canine search specialists, MDs, structual engineers) to join up, but the vast majority of team members come from within the sponsoring agency (the FD).

If it's something you really want to do, go for it! I moved 6 states away to get on a team, and it was worth it.
