rescue goes

Rumor has it that 12 medics are leaving DCFD in the next few weeks to go to PG FIRE, Also PG FIRE will be hiring 30 more medics in the next few months which means more medics will be leaving DC to work for PGFD as medics ONLY. PG Co will try to give them up to 9 years of service and match their pay.

Are they still hiring currently, if so where do you go for information?

They will start hiring about 30 medics within the next few months, if not sooner, you need to check their emlpoyment section on their web site once a week,
http://www.co.pg.md.us/
What will DCFD do once PG FIRE has taken most the medics.

Doubt it - not allowed by the personnel regulations. Especially the seniority credit.
More like an urban legend.

It's probably more accurate to say they'll have the option of "buying back" up to 3 yrs. of their service w/ D.C. for retirement credit in P.G. Then there's the 20 yr. retirement in P.G. to consider versus what in D.C.? 25 years?
Not to mention, if they are being hired as "M" Scale in P.G. and want to focus exclusively on EMS as a career, they will be able to do so... Hello, P.G. might just be taking a big step in the right direction.

We at BWI Airport lost 1 medic to the current PG class and had 5 medics apply to AACo.
If all the medics that test get hired, with the 4 openings now, that would be 50% of our medics gone!
Sure, DC has 25 year retirement, but consider this:
1.they have significantly more rescources available both now and in the future.
2.They also have city paid health insurance for retirees......run the numbers on that and tell me which one makes more sense.
3. They run more of everything...trauma, medical, fire, technical rescue, WMD's etc...if you like action, its hard to beat DC.
4. No volunteers

Sure if you want the "action," DC is a great place. But the retirement for EMS is still 35 years! Fire side is 25......Remember, EMS is the bastard child

Pre-87 = 30/55, Defined Benefit Plan starting at 56% I believe (might be 52%)
Post-87 = Defined Contribution Plan (Lump Sum distribution or monthly paymenst till account is empty), tax hit if less than 55

Okay....AND?
DCFD IS NOT hiring anymore civilians. Firemen & Fireman/paramedics only! The reitrement is 25 years....no age. See you in the basement of Grimke!

If they are not hiring any more civilians, then why is the job still posted as a Paramedic Position, not FF/Medic....Interesting, still ass backwards as usual

They way I see it, FEMS probably told DCOP to stop hiring DS699 (Basic Paramedic) positions 6 months ago. DCOP then gave it the same priority as when they were supposed to 'aggressively recruit' paramedics for the last 3 years.

Maybe so, but is there anything in writing that says DCFEMS is not hiring civilians, or is it just another one of Chief Thompson words of mouth. Like in 3 years there will be no more civilians in the department.

Okay, so they ARE still hiring Paramedics Only! It just states that at a future date, you may be required to become a FF. That announcement has been posted forever. ;)
