Has anyone heard of a RIF in the new fiscal year? The Admiral over the Southeast Region was going to do a RIF by 30 SEPT 04, but it was stopped, and now we heard one might start in the new fiscal year. Our dept was looking at losing 8-10 firefighters, and other bases were looking at a harder hit. I've also heard this is to help pay for the cost of the war, and that the southeast region is a "test" to see if "they" could downsize DOD wide. I'm just trying to see what other bases are hearing. Any new would help.

I have gotten information that NETC Newport,RI is looking to lose around 19. NS Mayport,FL about the same or more. Also, there seems to be a hiring slowdown/freeze in the Tidewater, VA area. So far this just seems to be Navy.

I'm glad someone else is hearing the same thing.....I think people were starting to think I was crazy.....
Here are the number I've seen..
11 Firefighters @ Key West
7 Firefighters @ Meridian
11 Firefighters @ Mid South
2 Firefighters @ GitMO
5 Firefighters @ Charleston
Total is 36 firefighter jobs in the Navy Southeast Region
Note that Mayport is not on the list. To my knowledge, they were on the previous list. The numbers above are from a RIF Summary Sheet from Commander, Navy Southeast Region.
I have a copy of a letter from Commander, Navy Southeast Region. In the letter is language like " Since this may be the only VSIP/VERA authorized by CNI prior to any FY-05 RIF, your consideration is strongly encouraged", " In total, our downsizing requirement are approximately 300 positions" and " We fully recognize that your VSIP opportunity window must close 30 days prior to issuance of RIF notices and that you must factor out of any planned RIF those employees that accept VSIP. We know that this will impact your RIF timeline. This is unfortunate but unavoidable.

Has anyone heard anything more on the RIF. I'm from Lakehurst in the NE Region. Last we heard was it could happen in april. Just wondering what is happening in other regions.
Also what if anything are the Unions or members doing to try and fight off CNI.

Just to let everyone know, the northeast has issued vesp/vera paperwork to all employees at my facility in NJ. They (HR) have also given official notice of a reduction. 2 battalions, 1 fire inspector, and 8 firefighters. All those affected are supposed to be off the rolls by 30 June.
Has anyone else been given official notice?

HR issued vesp/vera paperwork to all employees a while back with an effective date of 05 MAR 05. There hasn't been any talk about a RIF, but I'm guessing that'll start on 06 MAR 05. We already know HR will not get enough people to request a vesp/vera, so we think they'll use a RIF to get us down to the magic number of 43. We're at 47, but that's down from our original 56.
