View Full Version : Questions
1. Will f/f medics be subject to ems details? The order that came out made no mention of it. I know the answer, but just thought I'd put it out there for discussion.
2.What was the purpose of putting out another internal vacancy announcement for f/f /emt? I thought everybody in ems who wanted to crossover had already went through the application process. How many more on that side want to come over?

I think it would be safe to assume that once the number of available FF/medics exceeds the number of PEC vacancies (33 engines x 4 platoons = 132 FTEs), then any extras would be subject to transport unit details. Until then, I don't see it happening.

They will all come over once they figure out that being the permanent layout man in the 5th battalion (with an occasional ambulance detail) is a better job than riding the box all time. And as a bonus they get the opportunity to be represented by a real union, and get a fair shot at a promotions.
But oh won't it be hard for them to give up all that great supervision, sick or annual leave when ever you want and the opportunity to blame firemen for all your problems?
Really though I think the announcement went out again because we still need more FF/Medics to make the system work and management is committed to this path.

They cant be looking for medics to bad. I went through the whole process. Got done the physical and a couple of days later the doctor called and wanted an explanation of a hernia that she said "I had in the past" After a lenghty conversation on the phone with her, I was able to convince her that I have never had such a thing and that they must have me confused with someone else. Shortly after they called back and indeed had me confused. So I finally get to the pshycological and walla same thing. I get a call from Capt. Thornwood who said I failed the psych. Funny thing is prior to leaving the psych. exam doctor said I passed. Im quite confused because I currently work for one of the most respected police departments in Delaware where I have to undergo a psych exam annually and I have never had a problem with the psych. I am a NREMT-P, NFPA FF 1&2 &officer 1&2, NFPA Haz-Mat tech, swiftwater rescue tech, teach various ALS and BLS classes and hold multiple college degrees. Oh and I have no criminal record. I am very confused because if they are so short of QUALIFIED FF/Medics then they sure dont seem to be doing a good job with recruiting people. Yes I have been told that I can go through an appeal process, however I have hard feelings with the way the whole process has gone.

Appeal the test, and by the way get a good attorney in the mean time, they will give you some BS of why you cannot have your own doctors look at the test, and the results. Something about a waver you signed, but if you did not sign the waver you could not go on in the appointment process, an attorney will have a lot of fun with that type of process.
better yet let all those who failed this part of the test and contact you, will be good to get together and file another class lawsuit against the DC Fire & EMS Dept.

Hell, before I worked for DCEMS, the PFC doctor was convinced that because I am brown/green color blind that "You must see in black and white! There is no way for you to distinguish the traffic lights!"
Anyone who is color blind realizes what a load of crap that is. My own eye doctor wrote that I even have good enough vision to get a pilots license! After a short appeal I was on my way through the rest of the process.
Everything worth having is worth fighting for.

The real sad thing is that some people, believe it or not, aren't about the lawsuit and getting the money. Some folks just want to work there! As bad as that department needs good, qualified medics, they sure do a hell of a job turning them away! DCFEMS will NEVER learn, they just keep digging, then they end up in court, and losing!
