OK, let's start a new thread here, I asked this in a FF group I am in online and got great feedback.
So, what made you decide to get into Fire/Ems? Is it a family thing for you, or are you a new generation of Firefighter/Emt in your family?

My involvement in fire/ems was both a "family thing" and a calling. I started off in New London County as a volunteer firefighter and emt. Eventually I became career ems and eventually career fire. I am currently a career assistant chief in a department that does firefighting, hazmat, rescue and both first response/transport ems in Kentucky. I am also a volunteer assistant chief as well. My career has taken me far and wide. I have also been a fire inspector and a deputry fire marshal. I am working on my fifth year as a chief, my fifteenth year career and my twenty-sixth year in the fire service. I still love what I do and still love helping people!

Curious....How did the EMTmom get involved....?

Curious....How did the EMTmom get involved....? I was going through a divorce and was staying with friends. Her husband was on the FD and Amb.. I joined the amb. as an assoc. member, they told us we could start riding as observers, if we wanted. Like every vol. dept. you always need new members. I rode for I think maybe a week, got into an MRT class, got my ticket. Had it for maybe 2 months when I got into my EMT class, after that was Haz Mat Operational, then my Defib/Mast class. I spent almost 7 years on the ambulance. I don't do it now, but I miss it. Funniest part is, I can't stand the sight of blood. The only other one in my family who was in the service was my older brother. He was on the fire dept. in high school (not the one I'm on now), and he was a paramedic for NYC, for almost 20 years.
I'm now a member of the fire dept. aux., and webmaster of our dept. website.
weststaffordfire.50megs.com The photo albums are not working right now, but I am moving them to another server so hopefully they will be back online soon.

I joined my fire department when I was 16 1/2, and although it took me 6 months to decide wheather or not I wanted to join, (you have to be 16 to join), I was always interested in firefighting because my grandfather was a firefighter, my dad is a firefighter and i have an uncle and 3 cousins who are firefighters, one of which works for FDNY. And although I am only 18, I am a firefighter, emt, certified to dispach fire, ems, and police, and I have 13 college credits under my belt and I only just started college. My high school has this program through the local community college where students can leave high school half day and go out to the local fire training center and take all these classes, free of charge to the student because it is a course offered through the high school, and it only lasts 10 months, the months that school was in session, so the students don't loose any of their free time, and it is offered to any student throughout the entire county who is interested. But now I am attending the University of New Haven, and majoring in Fire/Arson Investigation, and I am damn proud to be one of the very few female firefighters in the fire service.

Good for you. Glad to see young people interested in this field. UNH is my Alma Mater. BS in Fire/Arson Investigation 01/89. Fred Mercilliott was the director then. He was retired FDNY and quite a character. His New York trips were the highlight of the semester. Good luck in your studies and Best Wishes for the future. PM me if you have any questions. :)

Good for you, danceswithhoses!!! I'm female, too- 20 yrs old, been in the fire service two years (will turn 21 this spring) and everything about it was hard at first- challenge after challenge. I just kept pressing on, and it's still tough at times, but I've learned how to cope, how to take what I've learned & teach it to others, and what it's like being in this service. I hope to have several more years a head of me, so I'm learning every day, and I'm very happy to be here, helping out whenever & wherever I can.

Nice to meet you, sister!

I got involved into the fire/ems services becuase it is a family thing. My dad was a ff for 25 years and a few of my cousins are ff also. It wasn't due to my father or my younger brother that made me want to be a ff/emt. If was becuase of my cousin that fought fires and rans as an EMT up until a few days before he died of cancer at the age of 24. I seen him enjoying himself and it helped him coped with his pain and misery. I told him when i was in 5th grade he was my hero and I wanted to be just like him. He told me that he was gald that I looked up to him but I was going to have a very hard time being accepted becuase I am a girl. This made me want it even more. I have been involed in the fire/ems services for 2 years now and am having the best time of my life. I think about him during every call and wish he was here to see me and be prode of me for all the training I have and want to get. Every call i run is in memory of him. Thanks to him I have found something I love to do.

I don't think anyone who cheated should get out of serving the time they are given. But, let's start putting some of those Enron idiots behind bars too! Those guys ruined thousands of lives with thier stealing. Martha is not one of my fav. people, so I wouldn't vote for her. And if you think for one second I would tell you or anyone else who I'm voting for in this years dog and pony show, you are mistaken.
Now back to the original question....lol Does the fact that you dion't know there are qualifications mean your answer is no? LOL

I have to agree...I would actually concider voting for Ronald McDonald...atleast he professes to being a clown....Myself and 3 female friends have searched the internet looking for gigolo qualifications to no avail......Could it be EMTMOM (within your experiences) that you have access to... or have already developed qualifications that you're willing to share.... ???

Wow...it's nice to see so many young women in the fire service. I joined the fire company last year at age 16 (as soon as I could!). I've always wanted to do this because my dad is a firefighter. I am still figuring out what I want to do as a full-time career, but I'll never leave the volunteer station. You go girls!! Keep up the great work..... ;)

I know this is the CT side of things on TWD,,but with EmtMom & Mrtmom2 around my part of the woods, just had to stop by here. I am a 4th generation FF, with the tradition starting with my Great Grandfather. My son was involved for a while but has since dropped out (His friends are more important now) hopefully one day he will continue the tradition.
I managed to break & start a new tradition within my family and that is thru the Ems.
