Interesting article in the Washington Post Sports Section on Cowboys coach Bill Parcells. (8/7/04)
The article concerned his leadership qualities and style. What stood out is his premise that he doesn't need to treat everyone equally or consistantly, he needs to do what is right by him to get the most out of his people.
The result is that he still has two players on his team he has had fights with, and cut one who may have a substance abuse problem but by all accounts got along greatly with.
I think its an interesting study and it definately works for him.
The takeaway for the fire service is: Do you think that everyone should be treated the same, or should managers have leeway to manage their people the way they see fit?
Ultimately the footbal coach has the ability to manage his people differently because he can be fired for their failures, but that doesn't happen in the fire service.
Would you be willing to put your job on the line to get the most our of your emplyees? Is the fire chief's job on the line if he doesn't get the most out of his employees?
;)
