Question, can anyone provide some info about a Navy Fire Department located in the Laurel area? It is listed in my records as NAVTECHREP Laurel MD. Thanks

Ted, The Navy facility in Laurel was actually at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab in Scaggsville. The APL already had a fire dept. there when the Navy came in to do some sort of research work and I beleive funded some of the fucntions at the site, including fire and security. I'm not real sure if these guys were considered DOD civilian firefighters or not. I thought that the Navy had finished what they were doing at APL and turned everything back over to them. The Navy-Marine Corps fire dept. phone directory no longer lists them. Before the Navy's stay there, the fire dept was staffed by three 8 hour shifts. Did the APL resume operation of the fire dept or has it closed or is the Navy still there? They used to run with Howard Co. sometimes as Station 20 I think.

In response to your question reference a navel type facility in the laurel area:
Yes it is the applied physics lab but it is part of the johns Hopkins university system and the word on the street is they do still in fact support the navy in an R&D way.
Enclosed is there web address. And yes they do still have a fire suppression department but they only work mon-fri in the day time only no more shift work.

The APL Fire Dept in fact does have a fire department with shift assignment.
5 total during the day. 2 day work and 3 around the clock. They work 24/48 with no break day. They staff an ambo, engine and a hazmat. With a mutual aide agreement from 7 to 3pm with howard county. A member of my tick station works for them. If you want some inside info I can have him provide some if needed.
