Does anyone have an idea how many apparatus will be @ this event on Nov. 7th?

http://www.dcfire.com/100.pdf

Not being familiar with the area, how far is it off a major highway coming from B'more?

Any stations in this area w/appartaus worth shooting (in safe areas?)

Thanks in advance.

It's not horribly far off of 495. The easiest way would be to take the Georgia Ave exit south. You'll be able to get pictures of E-22, T-11 and Rescue Squad 2 and E-24, both on GA Ave. Keep going south, left on Upshur St to the front gates of the Soldiers home.

You will also be in the area of Engine Co. 4, a unique piece of apparutus in the DCFD. It is the only Engine Company with a independent front suspension in DC, as well as being the only Engine Co, with a 60 series Detriot motor (it has more torque then any other engine and rescue in the city...for now). They are located at 2531 Sherman Ave., NW.

It is a Pierce. One of 6 delivered to DC last year, along with 8, 12, 16, 22, and 33 Engine Co.

yeah, I plan to pick up an ADC map, thanks. That's typically my M.O. when in a new city to shoot.

I know the "N.W." streets are generally safe... how about "N.E.".. I've been advised to steer clear of the South side... (?)

Are there any specialized apparatus generally in this area? (Foam Unit, Brush, some kind of Rapid response EMS vehicles I've heard about..?)

Post 9-11, and with terrorism precuations, etc., do you folks in DC think I'll be Ok with approaching the DCFD stations and asking them to pull some rigs out to shoot?

Thanks again for everyone's input!

is it safe to assume you are assigned to DCFD Rescue 2?

E24/RS2 is one of the firehouses on my list for Sunday.. are you guys planning to be in quarters or detailed to the expo?

Speaking as a DC Native and someone with good knowledge of DC streets, NW Streets are safe as long as you are on the West Side of 16th Street or Rock Creek Park. If you are in Brightwood, Petworth, Ft. Totten, anywhere off of Kansas Ave, Riggs Road, N. Capitol Street, Harewood or Park Road, be careful!

E4 is in Shaw, Sherman Ave. on the backside of Howard University. These are not streets you normally want to be caught on after dark.

E24, RS2, E22 and TK11 are on Georgia Ave. This part of Ga. Ave might look decievingly harmless during daylight hours, however the "Freaks Come out at Night." Anywhere on Ga. Ave from Florida Ave. to about the North Side of Walter Reed Army Hospital is like the Wild West after Dark.

Fourth Street that runs right through H.U. is also not nice. There are several DCHA Apartment projects that are pretty rough anytime of the day.

Best Places to be? Anywhere in the 5th Battalion (E5, E29, E31, E20 et. al,) is not bad. Northeast DC, mainly in the 17 Engine Area, is not too, too bad. It is near Catholic University and the Neighborhood is called Brookland. Mainly Middle-Class working people. My Family is from there and some still live there. Monroe St, Franklin St, Michigan Ave. from about N. Capitol Street to the City line is a nice neighborhood. The homes are neat looking, however like any city neighborhood, it has it's problems. Capitol Hill is also a nice place to visit.

Places to stay away from:

Congress Heights- SE
Benning Road- NE
E. Capitol St. on the East Side of the Anacostia
SW DC on the East Side of the Anacostia
MLK Ave. (Peaceful guy gets a Violent Street named after him...)
Malcolm X Ave. or any area outside the Bolling AFB/Naval Research Lab Area.
Montana Ave. - NE
Edgewood Pl. _ NE

It's been a while since I took a good ride around the city, so maybe some of these places are better now.

Neat Stations to visit:

E17- Monroe St. NE (Neat Single Engine House)
E22/TK11- One of the oldest houses in the city. Check out the Marble Tablet on the Front. 5700 Blk of Georgia Ave. NW
E12- Gotta give that place props, my Chief works there. :D 4th St. And Rhode Island Ave. NE
E11/TK6- Lots of History, Good people work there and the Wagon is Nice. 14th St. near Park Rd. NW.
E10/TK13- 1300 Blk. Florida Ave. NE. Busiest house in the Nation. Bad Neighborhood, but a unique bunch working there.
E23- Neat Single House on GW University Campus. Call for directions
E21- Addams-Morgan...was once part of a Historic Building Tour. Call for Directions
E5- Georgetown, Dent Pl. NW. Single House
E2/RS1- MCI Center/Chinatown
E24/RS2- Newest House in the City, about 10 blocks south of E22 on Ga. Ave. I think this house was built by Metro to make room for the Green Line where there Old House was. Interesting sidenote, Old E24 is now a housing for Subway systems for Metro. The Front of the Old House is preserved. Its on New Hampshire Ave. West of Georgia Ave.
E25- MLK Ave. SE.
E19- Pennsylvania Ave. SE, this house is cool because "Asst. Foreman T. Cosgrove Jones" works there.... :D

If you have any more questions, just let me know in a PM. I am not trying to step on the DC guys here, just giving you another Non DCFD persopective from someone who repsects the department and enjoys it's history...

DCFD is one of the Best Departments in the World, and the guys who work there show that in their pride for their jobs.

You know how to hurt a bunch of guys..

You mention the 5th but leave 16 ENGINE / TOWER 3 out of the mix a firehouse located in downtown(1018 13th St NW) built in 1932 and the Engine is celebrating their 100th Ann. They have an overall good guy, nice and modest Lieutenant on Platoon No. 1 ;)

6 Engine / Truck 4 on New Jersey Ave..

Some of the city's best firemen have come out of these houses....

I apologize emphatcically and request that if I am ever selected for a job downtown, I could still be one of your humble servants...... :D

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, comments, ideas, etc.

I'll be somewhat limited by time/logistics.. will try to make it to as many DC houses as possible on this trip, but with this type of support/info. I will surely plan another trip down in the spring when the weather is nice again.

Am mostly interested in unique/special services/new pieces.. hope to shoot RS 1 & 2, Tower 3, Command Unit, HazMat at least on Sunday.

Looking forward to this weekend! Since I'll have the little Odies with me as well, does anyone know if there's going to be a burger or hot dog burn going on during the show?

Thanks,
Odie

Here's a few photos from todays show. The turnout was a lot better than I thought it would be. Good job to everyone involved in setting this up.
To start things off: DCFD engine 18, a DCFD engine (little help please) and from PG, Brentwood's Engine 41 and (my personal favorite) Forestville Engine 231, now owned by the Thorne family.
