CRT/EMT-I Starting Pay: $33,652
EMT-P Starting Pay: $35,255

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Provide emergency medical services to the highest level of advanced life support certification; operate an advanced life support medical unit and/or other emergency firefighting and rescue equipment; perform fire prevention inspections, public education safety presentations, fire suppression activities, and participate in drills and training exercises.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school, six (6) or more months work experience; possession of a valid non-commercial class C motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State and the ability to obtain a class B motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State upon graduation from the Arundel County Fire Training Academy program or an equivalent motor vehicle operator’s license issued by another State. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at time of graduation from the Fire Training Academy.

STARTING PAY: All department vacancies are filled initially through Firefighter II positions at the 5% above minimum for EMT-I’s and 10% above minimum for EMT-P’s ($33,652 for EMT-I’s and $35,255 for EMT-P’s).

NON-COMPETITIVE PROMOTION: ALS certified employees who successfully complete the probationary period (one (1) year) will be eligible for a non-competitive promotion to Firefighter/Cardiac Rescue Technician (FFIV) or Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (FFV) based on ALS credentials.

OPEN HOUSE: Anne Arundel County Fire Department and Office of Personnel will host an Open House on January 8, 2005, noon to 4:00 p.m., at Anne Arundel County Fire Training Academy (8437 Maxwell Frye Road Millersville, Maryland 21108). Maxwell Frye Road is located off Veteran’s Highway. Representatives from the Office of Personnel will have information on completing an application and preparing for an interview. Representatives from the Fire Department will be available to answer questions pertaining to a career in Fire Service. While attendance at this session is not mandatory, it can substantially increase your standing in the examination process.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Applicants will be required to take the written examination on 01/29/05 at Old Mill High School and will be notified of their specific time by mail.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Appointees must successfully complete all portions of the Fire Training Academy Program and a probationary period of one (1) year in order to continue employment.

BENEFITS: Twenty–five (25) annual leave days and fifteen (15) paid sick days yearly; retirement and deferred compensation plans; a variety of health plans; dental and vision coverage; group life and accident insurance; and merit increases. Employees will be eligible for pension benefits upon completion of twenty years (20) of service.

SELECTION PROCEDURES: Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of any or all of the following: a written examination, education and experience review, panel interview(s), physical ability examination, and background investigation. Candidates who are conditionally offered employment must successfully complete a medical examination (including body fat %) before consideration for the Fire Training Academy. Reasons for disqualification may include, but are not limited to: poor work history, poor driving record, felony conviction, falsification of application or other documents, inability to competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process, or any other disqualifying causes determined by the Fire Department and the Office of Personnel.

NOTE: Applicants must achieve a sufficient standing in relation to other applicants and the number of vacancies in order to remain under consideration.

VOLUNTEER PREFERENCE: Awarded to any applicant who is a volunteer member of the Anne Arundel County Fire Service and who has actively served the two (2) years prior to application, passed the MFRI Basic Firefighting course, is a Certified Emergency Medical Technician, and has competitively completed ALL selection components necessary for inclusion on the eligibility list.
