LOCATION: Fire and Rescue Department, Office of Public Safety, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, MA-321/322.
AREA OF CONSIDERATION: Authority Employees and Outside Candidates
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Performs full performance level firefighter functions in fire prevention, suppression, rescue and emergency medical services at the basic life support level in airport, public roadway, and office and community settings. Responds to all types of emergency situations and, under the direction of the Incident Commander, carries out assigned duties to mitigate the emergency. Maintains assigned apparatus and equipment in clean and operationally ready condition. Helps maintain facilities in a clean, safe and healthy condition. Functions as Alarm Room Operator, as assigned. Assigned to one of three 24-hour shifts working an average 56-hour workweek.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: One year of experience in the control and extinguishment of fires as an active and regular member of an organized fire department. The one-year of experience will be credited against an average of 56 hours per week or 2912 hours per year. To be creditable, volunteer experience must have included regular attendance at regularly scheduled training sessions and must also have included regular and actual participation in fighting fires.
In addition, qualified candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:
1. Must be 18 years old by date of employment;
2. Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate;
And, provide a copy of the following referenced document with their application package:
3. EMT-B Certification (or higher) from the Virginia Department of Health, National Registry (showing effective and expiration dates), or a state certification which is recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Experience gained in combating fires resulting from aircraft crashes or other accidents peculiar to airfield operations are preferred. Airport Firefighter, Firefighter I and II, Haz Mat Operations/Technician training and college level courses or a degree in Fire Science are also preferred. Dispatcher experience, technical rescue experience, weapons of mass destruction training, computer experience and foreign language proficiency are highly desirable.
EVALUATION CRITERIA: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications described above will be further evaluated by a subject matter expert panel. The evaluation is based upon the total information contained in your application form and considers all required and preferred qualifications including job-related experience, training and education. The ranking of qualified candidates will be accomplished by comparing each qualified candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities with the evaluation factors listed on:

To be rated qualified, the experience on your application must support the minimum qualification requirements of the position and demonstrate that you possess: 1) knowledge of and skill in fire prevention, suppression, rescue and EMS (basic life support, EMT-B methods, tactics, techniques, apparatus, equipment, tools and materials to respond to, mitigate and help close out a wide variety of routine and emergency incidents; 2) skill in the operation of large, specialized motor vehicles under normal and adverse driving conditions and in emergency situation; and 3) skill in the maintenance and use of fire suppression apparatus and fire/EMS/rescue equipment to maintain and use them safely and effectively. The information you provide on your application determines if you are qualified for this position. If you do not provide sufficient information you may be rated not qualified.
Applicants who score 60 and above on the application rating will be scheduled and notified of an examination (general aptitude test). Testing dates and deadlines for receipt of applications for those testing dates are as follows:

The written test is weighted at 30% and the application rating is weighted at 70%. Your name will be placed on a Register according to your final score. As vacancies occur in the Fire and Rescue Department, only the best-qualified candidates will be referred to the Fire Chief, in rank order, for further consideration until the register expires, one-year unless exhausted sooner.
All candidates referred to the Fire Chief are subject to an oral interview, a physical agility test and a complete background investigation (to include a full employment history check; a credit check; a criminal history check; and a driving record check). If tentatively selected, a pre-employment medical examination to include drug testing will be required before a final hire date is determined. Psychological testing may also be required. Employees must pass annual medical testing criteria. If called for an interview, candidates must provide proof of valid driver's license from state of residence.
