Any reason why some dept.'s are calling out to 36 Control and instead of using 36 Control there using Orange 911 or Orange County 911?. I started hearing that with a few dept.'s such as Silver Lake yesterday, any reason?.
Officially starting Oct 1st all agencies will use the radio identifier orange 911 instead of 36 control (fire) /wau718 (ems) /central (PD) . The memo went out to everyone on Tuesday, some of the agenicies decided to go ahead and start using it now to get used to it. Control will answer either identifier, as they have answered KEE315 during the change over to 36 control. Its all part of NIMS compliance and plain language. Ulster and Dutchess started it earlier in the year

I find it interesting that this "memo" went out on Tuesday and this was the first place I heard about it. I seem to never have a problem getting e-mails about who is having a pancake breakfast, golf outing, wet-down and lets not forget the weekly tourism schedule but I don't get an email about a change in the county fire radio identifer...... Things like this make me wonder where priorities are sometimes.
According to the email I got from my corrdinator this evening about the switch it mentions nothing about department numbers. Seeing its part of the "plain language" NIMS compliancy I would venture to say calling to 911 by Dept numbers would be a step backwards...
In the scheme of things, this really doesn't bother me. It's not really something which matters much anyhow. However, it just goes to demonstrate something I have learned over the years.
In every single area of life that I have entered into, people in charge are never happy unless they are changing things.
It doesn't matter if things need fixing or they don't. People in charge like change.
The old adage that "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" never occurs to these guys. They swear by "If it ain't broken, fuck with it anyhow just so we can seem important or to look like we're doing something."
Oh yes our great friend NIMS is back for a way to try and make talking on a fire scene better. I 100% agree that 10 codes are not the way. Down here we are slowly getting away from 10 codes in the fire departments in the county. We also don’t call dispatch anything like 36 control. We call it “fire com” or “county”. But when you use 10 codes for over 10 + years its hard from some of these guys to give it up. Hope Orange-911 a lot of good luck and hope everyone has a easy trans-action. Unlike my “clear text” to 10 code switch.
10-codes wouldn't be all that bad, if there was ONE uniform set of them for everyone to follow. When two different agencies use different sets of codes, it can be confusing. The 10-codes used by Middletown PD and the 10-codes used by Town of Wallkill PD are entirely different animals.
Plain language would definitely be simpler all around, though. Not much of an argument there.
